About this listen

Eighteen-year-old Betsy Blake yearns for love and romance, but the unattached men of Virginia City are all ill-mannered ranch hands without the gentlemanly qualities she desires. When her friend Susannah finds a husband by writing a mail-order groom advertisement in the paper, Betsy decides to pen her own ad specifying her wish for a well-dressed, mannerly husband from the East, and she excitedly awaits a response from the man of her dreams.

Roderick Mason's reputation as an architect in NYC has earned him great success, but he hasn't been as lucky in love. The women of his circle are perfectly lovely, observing every etiquette with practice and ease, but he longs for adventure and a woman who will challenge him. When he reads an ad in the paper requesting a gentleman groom, he decides it's time to abandon life as he knows it and head to the Wild West.

Roderick and Betsy are immediately smitten, but they soon discover that not everyone in Virginia City is pleased by their match, especially one man who wants Betsy as his own. As Betsy's stalker becomes increasingly threatening, Roderick realizes he will go to great lengths to protect his sweet little country girl, including taking her over his knee for some painful discipline when she misbehaves or puts herself in danger. Will Betsy learn to face her problems and accept Roderick's love and discipline, or will he never succeed at what he desires most - protecting and catching Betsy?

Warning: Catching Betsy is a historical western romance containing sexual scenes and domestic discipline, including punishment spanking. If these themes offend you, please don't listen to this audiobook.

Betsy and Roderick

Betsy is friends with Susannah from book 1. When Susannah finds her husband through mail order, Betsy decides to do the same. I enjoyed the characters and the story. Jack Leonard did a great job with the narration. I received this free copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

a nice story

an overall good story, I just didn't like the audible, and that usually makes or breaks a book for me, great mail order husband, but strict, not horribly strict but Betsy will have to learn to curb her temper, she is an overall sweet girl who he falls for 🫶

Sexy Jack Leonard makes Betsy come alive

I just can't get enough of Amelia Smarts, and when I heard that Catching Betsy was on audio, I just had to listen to it.
Amelia's writing comes alive told by the sexy voice of Jack Leonard. He blows life into all the characters and l literally feel his warmth seep through my veins while listening. The story gets better every time I listen to it, and I can only recommend it with all my heart.

I have a thing for Amelia Smarts. I’ll admit it right away. I have a bit of a crush on her and her writing and her characters. So, perhaps I’m not really objective anymore? I can fully understand if you shake your head and tsk at me, but what is a woman to do? When an author’s writing just leaves you breathless and wanting more?

Catching Betsy did just that to me.
Betsy Blake is a young eighteen-year-old woman who wants to get married, but she is not interested in the raw and tough cowboys living in Virginia City, she wants a gentleman with a gentleman’s position.
So, the feisty young woman places an ad in New York Times, looking for a mail order groom, lying about her age and do not tell anyone about the ad.
Roderick Mason is a very accomplished architect living in New York. He wants a family to share his life with, but can’t seem to find a woman to hold his interest. He sees Betsy’s ad and is intrigued.
When he gets to Virginia City, he discovers that not everything is as the young Betsy had written in her telegrams but that doesn’t scare him away. It makes him want to protect the young woman and teach her that a good hard punishment is sometimes the only thing that can help with bratty behavior.

Amelia creates the most likable characters. Betsy is such a sweet girl with a naughty twist.
Roderick is a real gentleman but deep down he carries the most wicked desires, and it was impossible for me not to fall a little in love with him.

We catch up with Susannah and Adam, from the first book in the series, and it was so good to “see” them again.

Amelia’s writing is as always stunningly beautiful, and she flips the reader back in time with much grace.

For the fans of historical romance, this is a treat, and a must read and listen!

Thanks to Amelia Smarts for this captivating advanced copy of book and audio!

Nice little romance with some extra steam provided

I was provided this audiobook through Audiobook Boom at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review.

Betsy is looking for a husband, but not one from her area, who, according to Betsy, are ill mannered and cow hands. So Betsy puts an ad in papers in the cities as a mail order bride.

Roderick, a New York Architect, who is tired of the women he meets, as they are very shallow and want him for his money. He answers Betsy ad, but Betsy wasn't 100% truthful.. Roderick must discipline her for this.

Great story and I've listened to a few of Amelia Smarts books, and enjoyed all.

The narration was also well done

Great read

Catching Betsy by Amelia Smarts was a good read. Betsy is only eighteen but she wants love and romance. Betsy decided to find a mail-order groom but wasn’t completely honest in her ad. Roderick responds to her ad but isn’t happy about her lies. I loved Betsy and Roderick’s story.

Surprised

I read a lot of positive reviews for this book so was surprised that I found it so difficult to get into. I found Betsy immature and irritating. Roderick’s “punishments “ in my opinion were borderline abusive. I also found that the story was incomplete in many spots and I felt the storyline was lacking. This is the first book I have listened to from this author and I probably won’t try another. I guess it’s good that so many people liked it, however I wasn’t one of them. Jack Leonard did do a good job of narrating though. This book was given to me for free and I provided this unbiased review.

A Little Over The Top For Me...

I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.
It is a steamy love story, that's for sure, but I must say that I'm growing tired of all these extreme punishment scenes after the success of the 50 Shades series. OK, point taken... Now let's move on to something more original. That said, the book is well written and the storyline could potentially ring true...maybe... Light read great for spending an afternoon with a book with a happy ending.
The performance was great and the characters pleasant. I especially liked that Betsy acted like a still immature 18 years old girl.

So much fun!

Talk about a fun listen, Amelia Smarts has done it again! I love this mail-order groom idea, and Betsy is a delight. Betsy is 18 years old and like her friend Susannah, has decided that ordering herself a groom is the way to find her soulmate. She catches the eye of Roderick, a successful architect in New York. He travels to her but what he finds is not exactly what he expected! With a few embellishments and Betsy's immaturity, Roderick has his hands full...in more ways than one! I loved this story. The recurring characters of Adam and Susannah, along with their two children is a treat, plus we get to see that alpha presence that Adam is so known for. There were a few scenes that just brought a smile to my face, like with the blueberry pie starting the book off with a chuckle. Smarts infuses a little suspense into the story as well, giving a glimpse of the protective man Roderick is. Amelia's style of writing is charming and fun, and I can't wait for the next one.

This is the first time I have listened to Jack Leonard perform a narration. I really enjoyed his voice, well paced and has a variety of characters that are easily distinguishable. Looking forward to hearing more from him.
