About this listen

In eight years Marlon James will be one of the brightest rising stars in the music industry. Bristol Gray will be his tough, no-nonsense manager.

But when they first meet, she's a college student finding her way in the world, and he's an artist determined to make his way in it.

From completely different worlds, all the things that should separate them only draw them closer.

It's a beautiful beginning, but where will the story end?

Contains mature themes.

Looking forward to Grip

I’m a big fan of Kennedy Ryan. I thought this book had a little too much “lessons for white girl listeners” (okay, some were helpful), but I still enjoyed it and look forward to Grip.

Amazing Storyline

This only being the second book I've experienced by this Kennedy Ryan, I am pleased to say her books are just that.... An experience! I absolutely love these storylines. Chefs kiss! The only thing I found difficult to move passed in this book was the female narrator's voice of Grip. It was hard to imagine him as a rapper from Compton when she made him sound like a country bumpkin from Alabama. It made me cringe when she so effortlessly said the N word as you would hear a black person say it but nothing else. JD will probably always be one of my favorite male narrators so no complaints there. Overall, the writing was fantastic and I'm excited to read all of her books!

Good prequel

I love when I can get some back story to something before it starts. Narrators were dope. Did not see the end coming. Going to the next book now.

Meh…Good but not great

So I enjoy this author alot but this book was just ‘okay’ to me. If you enjoy movies where the main characters talk the whole time then this book is for you. Because they were having ‘difficult’ and thought provoking conversations I can see why some people loved it. Me, I was over it…quickly. Plus I don’t care for movies like that so that’s the vibe I got. I did see one review where the person said she was over the ‘white girl lessons’ and I was confused until the 3rd time. There are only so many ‘AH HA I’m black, you’re white, you’ll never understand!” Or the don’t judge a book by its cover examples you can bring up before it becomes mundane. Hopefully book 2 and 3 aren’t the same way.

no words

I would have like for the narrators setup to be same as My soul to keep. Where the man narrator speaks his parts because Jakobi's voice was perfect for the role but his voice was under utilized which is a shame. His voice would have added a spark to the story because Maxine voice was to whiny for my liking.

Unexpected love

Everything about this book was unexpected from the characters to the story line. You immediately just want everyone to win and get what they are working towards. I loved these characters so much

holy jeez!

As always, I am late to the party of epic books. And this was only the prequel... the full length novel still awaits me. Two novels actually. hallelujah! And these narrators are top notch!

Wooooow

I hâte prequels! so for me love this story is saying something!! First narrators. Maxine Mitchell became Bristol. Her voice jarred me at first but quickly forgotten. She acts not reads and on par with Wesleigh . And no male narrator has matched JD!!
Kennedy Ryan is a beast of a writer and as a Logophile, I’m in awe of how she wields her pen. Every character, even minor ones, have layers and serve the story. It’s great to know how these characters fell in love and how the rift occurred so I can better enjoy their path back to each other in the series.

Loved this so much!

I really loved this book. The narrators so an amazing job given there is a lot of rap/spoken work poetry it was seamless. This book so so much deeper than your typical romance and I am so here for it!
