Publisher's summary

James Rearden knew what he was: A career officer dedicated to advancing in the Royal Australian Navy to the ranks of Command. He has already enjoyed his time in charge of a patrol ship, and believes himself well situated to take his place among the captains of the country's larger warships. But a political foe changes his destiny and diverts him to a duty for which he is ill-suited, hoping he will fail.

James isn't one to accept failure. And as it turns out, the new assignment is both intellectually challenging and with an unexpectedly pleasant feature of working with people he admires in many ways. While his career might be stalled, at least he might make a difference helping a scientist to achieve her dream.

On the eve of her success, a religious zealot disrupts the process and threatens to destroy them all. What followed...no one could have expected. Forced into a journey that James would never have expected to find outside a work of science fiction, him and the small group of survivors will need to use every tool and technique at their disposal to stay alive...and hopefully, find their way home.

Note: This full-length novel contains science fiction and military style action, adventure, science, and violence. There are also explicit scenes of descriptive sex, which includes harem elements and all sorts of naughtiness. For the entertainment of adults only!

Very Intriguing Story

Fanatics have a bad habit of fouling many of mankind's achievements. This story was full of well fleshed out characters with carefully crafted history's. While their Story is far from complete this chapter of their tale was done very well.

At times I found it somewhat difficult to distinguish between the narrated voices of each character. But I found that, at least for me, it did not detract from the overall story. In fact I think that our narrator did an excellent job of handling each of the diverse accents from characters all around our world.

Very interesting start to a new series

I'm a big fan of Shawn Kets works in general. This story is a little slower than his other works, but that allows for some really interesting world building and character development.
T. K. Love does a nice job of giving the characters a voice.
Definitely looking forward to book two.

really good story

really enjoy the baseline story and how the torrid sex scenes are so strategically slotted in place. book is not just over the top juvenile fantasy. you could remove the sex and it would still be a good story. with those scenes it's just hot.

Fool me once

After reading the synopsis and some the reviews. I came to the generalized expectation that the premise wasn't not too far off GATE or a stranded in fantasy type of deal. Boy was I wrong, cause right off the bat things started to take that tale-tell turn of a slow burner thriller. Which works perfectly fine for a twist on the genre; though not to this extent where the danger comes a nut case hell bent on becoming a martyr. Yet, looking past that the sexy times are pretty great imo.

Wow what a surprise!

I can’t explain how much I enjoyed this book the navy mixed with the planner travel and harem aspect blended so well together and while some of the deaths did seem a bit forced for all the guys to get killed I could accept that it was needed for the story and really enjoyed it from start to finish

nice

is what you hope for and a little more, has a nice world built up for the first chapters and in a way is great that the harem/adult elements take time to get to and not the sole reason to enjoy the story.

Characters are Flat as Pancakes

As evidenced in "The Cost of Being Special", Keys can do better. That said, I listened to this twice, once originally and again just now to see if I was getting book 2, and I still can't begin to separate the gaggle of females presented here. Nobody gets enough real development. Yes, there are names attached to the people who go off and do tasks, but they don't matter and they don't stick. Neither does the attempt to attach that same name to cultural differences / stereotypes.

This is a good writer laboring under a premise and setup that's a stinker and it doesn't make for a good book. My opinion and your mileage may vary.

Keys left himself a back door pilot with Jackie and Musk Ox from the aforementioned series and I would encourage him to give that option a good look.
