It goes by many names: bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadomasochism, and more. In Jay Wiseman's SM 101, the long-taboo subject of consensual sadomasochism is accurately, insightfully presented in the context of adult human sexuality, experience, and tradition for the interested non-specialist general listener.
SM 101 surveys the entire spectrum of consensual sadomasochistic practices from bondage, to spanking, to erotic role-playing, and more. Now in an expanded second edition, SM 101 includes a new chapter on starting and running sadomaschistic organizations and events for consenting adults.
Contains mature themes.

The narrator's voice is not right for the content

Two things primarily:
1) First and foremost is the narrator. I feel like he's presenting this book as if its some kind of 1980's cooperate instructional video. Very stiff, no connection, no nuance in tone, no emotion. It's just.... hard get through. I might have been better off just buying the Kindle version or a physical copy to read.
2) This boo seems to be HIGHLY recommended from several sources. However, it seems a bit overdue for an updated version. I believe this is from the 90's, and a lot of the chapters show. Information on placing magazine and newspaper personal ads, the cost/benefit analysis of paying for landline voicemail services, advice on how to wear special patterned bandanas to signal what type of BDSM you're into... etc etc
Now that's not to say I'm not appreciating the majority of the information. I'm only about 40% in and have defiantly enjoyed the chapters on aspects such as consent, safe words, ethics, checking in, negotiation... but I just wish there was an updated version that wasn't over 20 years old haha.
For example, Shibari/Rope is one aspect of BDSM I have spent a very minimal amount of time looking into for myself, and I've instantly found a lot of the examples/suggestions in this book dated. Types of rope used, suggestions to go to a Bait & Tackle shop or a Magician's Supply Shop to find rope.... I'm sure this was useful and valid information 25 years ago, I don't feel it is very helpful now in 2023.
So, knowing how dated a lot of the advice is for the "Rope" section makes me hesitant to want to heed the words of upcoming chapters, the ones I really don't know anything about (gags, handcuffs, chains, whips, paddling, etc).
Still, I plan to finish the book, and will update my review if I do. I'm sure there is lots of very valuable information in the remainder of this book, if I can just keep very mindful that this was all written 20+ years ago.
I just hope I can power through dealing with this narrator's voice!
40% in so far, narrator is making this rough.
