About this listen

After fleeing Hearthold with a fugitive princess in tow, Damon Al-Kendras finally arrives home. He’s eager to see his Aesta and Ria once more after weeks of maintaining a careful, respectful balance between Vel and Kastet.

But as it happens, coming home is just the start. A new enemy lurks in the shadows, one uniquely suited to the task of hunting and killing mages. When push comes to shove, what will Damon do to protect the women he loves?

This book contains forbidden consensual sexual encounters between the main character and the closest women in his life.

Good continuation of

If you liked other books by Anya Merchant you will like these too. Lots of sexual tension but not overpowered by sex scenes

Eva Caine is perfect

Great smutty fantasy world stuff. The protagonist gets a little too aggressive (we're talking flirting with r-word territory) at times for my tastes, but that's the author's style with their other books. Aside from that, it's more of the ongoing bawdy tale of Damon, Vel and the others you've come to enjoy.

So very nearly excellent

Narrator is great but i don’t really see any overall progression for the characters it’s just 2 steps forwards 2 steps back over and over again. The relationships between the characters suffer from the same problem. Every time seemingly meaningful strides are made they’re immediately torn away. Leads to the MC keeping everyone at arms length which seriously detracts from the relevance of each relationship. If there was actual development of the relationships I think the series would be incredible but it’s 6 books in and the initial relationships are exactly where they were at the start of the series. To summarize: still worth the listen, but only if you’ve already gotten this far. don’t expect much character development.

Another good book in the series

It seems that every time I reach the end of one of these books, I look forward to the next.

One of the best ... marred by frustrating flaws

First off, Anya Merchant is one of the consistently best authors in a genre filled with shoddy writing. Her stories have amazing sexual tension, natural sounding conversations, characters with actual personalities, fast moving action, etc.

Unfortunately, she also has a tendency to have her MCs make completely bone-headed decisions at various points in the story, just for the sake of creating drama and added complications. And in this book, what the MC did to his family in the last few chapters wasn't just bone-headed, but 100% unnecessary and inexplicable. There was no strategic value in it, and his explanation — that they weren't willing to do what needed to be done — made no sense.

Oh, and it also absolutely crossed the line. In a genre where morally dubious relationships are acceptable, consent—sexual or otherwise—is still very much a thing. Maybe other listeners won't have as much of an issue with this, but it left a bad taste in my mouth.

One more thing about the story: Why the hell would a swordsman be suddenly so reluctant to kill assassins who are after him? And why would his sword get all pissy at him for killing??? Again, another development that makes very little sense, and seems to be purely for plot purposes.

As for Eva Caine's performance, she's decent, I guess. But compared to Lana Lee, she's unfortunately a step down. Lana Lee had very distinct voices for all the characters, and she *acted* out the roles. Eva has barely any distinction between the various voices, and she's more a voice *reader*, rather than a voice actor.

could have been great

The total lack of growth in the characters and unwillingness to actually deal with problems. The total reluctance of the MC to actually kill has me so infuriated then when he does his sword is offended WTAF. Narrator did a very good job
