Adam Cotton was born in Brighton, East Sussex, England, in 1963, where he grew up and attended school. Fascinated by aviation from an early age, he joined the local squadron of the Air Training Corps aged 13, and had his first experience of flight in a De Haviland Chipmunk T.10 of the Air Experience Flight at Hamble a year later. In 1981, he soloed in a glider at the former wartime airfield at RAF Kenley. After forays into hang gliding and parachuting, he started taking flying lessons at his own expense aged 19, gaining his Private Pilot's Licence aged 20. Over the next few years, he added Night and IMC Ratings, and learned how to fly passable aerobatics! Having always written for his own amusement and for the entertainment of work colleagues, his first commercially published work was an article for "Pilot" magazine in 2000. As well as further articles for the same periodical, he has also written articles for "Flyer", "Sailplane & Gliding", and "Aeroplane" magazines. He was also one of the regular contributors to "PC Pilot" magazine for almost three years. In 2019, his first book was published. This was an in-depth study of the Gloster Gladiator biplane, charting its story through conception, design, construction, and operational usage. In 2020, he published his first eBook, a biography of the Canadian Spitfire pilot Jack Charles, most of the research for which was undertaken in the 1990s. He followed this up with a second Book in April 2021, this time a biography of an unknown Beaufighter and Mosquito night fighter pilot. He is currently working on his next book. Although he has reluctantly now hung up his flying helmet and goggles, he continues to be fascinated by aviation and its history.
