Essek William Kenyon (1867–1948) was a remarkable figure in Christian ministry, known for his impactful teachings and writings. Let’s explore a brief biography of this influential man: Early Life and Conversion: Kenyon was born on April 25, 1867, in Hadley, New York. At the age of 17, he experienced a life-changing conversion during a Methodist prayer meeting. In his early twenties, he became a church member and even delivered his first sermon at the Methodist Church of Amsterdam, New York, where he served as a deacon. Ministry and Education: Despite initially desiring to be an actor, Kenyon earned a living as a piano and organ salesperson. He briefly attended the Emerson School of Oratory in Boston to hone his acting skills in 1892. However, his life took a different turn when he attended services led by pastor Adoniram Judson (A.J.) Gordon at Clarendon Street Baptist Church. There, Kenyon and his wife rededicated their lives to Christianity. Kenyon joined the Free Will Baptists and became a pastor at a small church in Elmira, New York. In 1898, he founded the Bethel Bible Institute in Spencer, Massachusetts, which remained operational until 1923. Kenyon served as its president for twenty-five years. The institute later moved to Providence, Rhode Island, and became Providence Bible Institute, eventually merging with Gordon College (named after one of Kenyon’s mentors, A. J. Gordon). Today, it is known as Gordon College. Legacy and Influence: Kenyon authored numerous books that continue to be in great demand today. His theological teachings, often associated with the “positive confession” theology prevalent in Word of Faith Pentecostalism, have left a lasting impact. While some suggested and misaligned that Kenyon’s views were influenced by the New Thought Movement, others argue that he primarily developed his positive confession teaching from the teachings of Holiness Movement, Faith Cure, and Higher Life movement ministers of the late 19th century.
