Geral N. Scott grew up in California, Michigan, California (again), Nevada, Utah and finally Washington State. After graduating from high school, he worked for a while as a baker, then spent several years in Japan where he learned to speak the language and to do live-direct-translating of spoken Japanese to English and vice versa. Mr. Scott returned to the United States to complete a science degree while working as a baker (mornings and weekends) and as an apprentice embalmer (afternoons and evenings). The funeral home knew about the baking, but somehow Geral consistently forgot to tell the bakery about the embalming. He thought they'd eventually figure it out since he was living in the funeral home - luckily they didn't. An avid reader of fiction from a very young age, he didn't learn to love writing until his freshman year of college, where a professional writer/adjunct professor mentored Geral and convinced him that, in spite of his science education, he was destined to write stories for a living. Geral has since tried diligently to locate that dedicated professor, but thus far the man has eluded capture and punishment. After completing his bakery apprenticeship, his degree and his time in the funeral home, he and his young wife built a home, had 4 kids, traveled, camped, played and did just enough real work and writing to keep a roof over their heads and beans and rice on the table. Now that the kids are almost all grown, much less real work and much more writing!
