While the topic of Vietnam is central in all of his major works, it’s always presented from an honest and unvarnished perspective, demonstrating the ugliness of war and why it should never be taken lightly.

Story
Hailed by The New York Times as "a marvel of storytelling", The Things They Carried’s portrayal of the boots-on-the-ground experience of soldiers in the Vietnam War is a landmark in war writing. Now, three-time Emmy Award winner-Bryan Cranston, star of the hit TV series Breaking Bad, delivers an electrifying performance that walks the book’s hallucinatory line between reality and fiction and highlights the emotional power of the spoken word.

Emotionally Powerful
"Over the years, I've read several novels centering on the Vietnam War, but The Things They Carried is in a class of its own. It is emotionally riveting and powerful, without being didactic or maudlin. Although there is a distinct plot, the various scenes are stories in and of themselves, which depict the total horror of Vietnam and the lasting impact it had on the survivors. By the end of the book, I was emotionally drained. The Things They Carried is contemporary fiction at its best. The narrator [Bryan Cranston, Emmy award-winning star of Breaking Bad] was so good, so natural, that his presentation was a large part of what engrossed me."

Memory and the Erasure Thereof
"As powerful a display of storytelling as I’ve ever encountered. The effects of war, dreams deferred, dreams abandoned, love, and trauma — all set against the backdrop of the great Minnesota wilderness. O’Brien is fantastic, and Ganser narrates beautifully."

Story
Tim O'Brien gave us this intensely personal account of his year as a foot soldier in Vietnam. The author takes us with him to experience combat from behind an infantryman's rifle, to walk the minefields of My Lai, to crawl into the ghostly tunnels, and to explore the ambiguities of manhood and morality in a war gone terribly wrong.

Memoirs from a foot soldier in Vietnam
If I Die in a Combat Zone: Box Me Up and Ship Me Home is a deeply personal meditation on Tim O'Brien's experiences while serving in the Vietnam War. This beautifully written autobiographical account provides vivid and searingly honest recollections of his life as an infantryman—trudging through minefields in the jungles of Vietnam, while ducking gunfire and watching the lives of soldiers on both sides cut drastically short. A raw and unfiltered look at the indelible events that O’Brien lived through during his tour of service, this poignant listen, narrated compellingly by Dan John Miller, serves as a veracious examination of the horrors and moral complexities of war.
