Modern parenting is in a complicated place. By some estimates, fathers today spend seven times more time parenting than their dads did. And while there are a ton of parenting books, writer Stephen Marche says that most are aimed at women and are designed to make them feel like they are doing something wrong. Enter How Not to F*ck Up Your Kids Too Bad, an Audible Original.

So good

You shouldn’t need a parenting manual, but…
While I do love that, for once, there’s a parenting guide directed specifically at the fathering side of the equation, as a mother of two young girls, I also found much to appreciate in this Audible Original. Chiefly, it gives us permission to chill out a bit with our childrearing—one notably enlightening chapter explores whether yelling is the new spanking (which, incidentally I listened to, hoarse from the previous night’s efforts to be heard over my quarreling offspring). Stephen Marche, the author and host, logged time and miles around the globe to learn more about the effects of screentime, free-range parenting, sex after marriage, and just how much your kid’s name really matters in the end. The takeaways are equal parts reassuring and motivating: we’re never going to get it 100% right, but Marche offers great tools for parents like me who are doing our best to not get it totally wrong.

Since it’s such a "natural" part of the human experience, it feels like you should "naturally" know and be able to respond to the changes that are going on inside—and outside—your body. Enter: the reassuring voice of Heidi Murkoff, whose words have for 35 years guided and consoled expectant moms into this new realm of parenthood. Now, along with a dozen other narrators—including her own daughter, Emma—you get to hear quite literally from the experts on everything from prenatal testing basics, to newly added topics such as alternative medicine, IVF, and hypnobirthing. - The story that you think you’ve heard, but haven’t—and must
- By now, you’ve likely heard the shockingly horrific story of the USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who sexually abused at least 150 girls under the guise of physical therapy. But what you likely haven’t heard are the raw, unencumbered voices of the gymnasts who eventually brought the truth to light and took him down. Among the chilling stories you hear from the now-adult victims: how, as children, Nassar groomed them for his unique, sought-after "therapy" and the way the community rationalized his beyond-invasive "treatment." Journalists Mary Pilon and Carla Correa meticulously reported and interviewed those affected to bring to life the stories and narrative that was so long hidden behind the groupthink propagated by the world of elite gymnastics. In no way is this easy listening, but it is chilling, riveting, and deeply necessary for anyone looking to prevent atrocities like this from happening again.

- Move fast and listen to good leadership advice
- Through his books The Startup Way and The Lean Startup, Eric Ries has achieved leadership-guru status among those hoping to emulate the success of companies born and bred in and around Silicon Valley — both literally and zeitgeistily. (If you’ve seen a lot of email signatures with variations on the word "entrepreneur" in them, you probably have him to thank.) Buzzwords aside, getting managers to embrace the "move fast and break things" mentality espoused by a certain Northern Californian breed of employee isn’t always easy. That’s why Ries’s Leader's Guide, with prescriptive advice on how to implement these iconoclastic philosophies, is bound to be a must-listen for the new-era workplace.

- The power of being personable, not just personnel
- If you’re hoping to achieve balance not just between your work life and your non-work life, but your work self and your non-work self, Fran Hauser’s paean to workplace kindness will likely be the business-genre listen you never knew you needed. For me, it was freeing to know that making cookies for coworkers won’t torpedo your career, and weeping in the office isn’t the surefire way to a pink slip. On the contrary, Hauser strongly (but likeably) contends: perhaps our humanness is the most powerful human resource there is. It’s simultaneously plain as day and revolutionary. A must-listen for women hoping to find their authentic footing at their job.

- Don’t believe everything you read on the internet (except this)
- The titular "August" here is late adult-film star, August Ames, nee Mercedes Grabowski, who died by apparent suicide around the time she was the subject of a massive Twitter pile-on. Author and audio-storyteller extraordinaire, Jon Ronson, pulls up every corner to get the full picture. He explores questions like: Did her spouse have anything to do with her untimely end? Was social media bullying really to blame, or were other factors at play? The Last Days of August listens like equal parts mystery, thriller, social science exploration, and embedded journalistic undertaking—and it’s ultimately so satisfying in the end (albeit tragically so). And, lucky for Audible members this month, there's no credit required to listen.

- Length: 9 hrs and 26 mins

- The search for a missing newborn—and maternal perfection
- Embedded in this utterly unputdownable mystery is a great takeaway message for new mothers everywhere: none of us really know what we’re doing, even if to all outward appearances we seem to have it all figured out. While the story of a missing newborn will keep you hooked, the nuances—psychological, emotional, and relationship-bound—of bringing a new human into the world keep the mystery grounded. As the clues come together around who abducted a baby during a moms' night out, so do the realizations that, in fact, the concept of the “perfect mother” is itself a mystery—and altogether nonexistent.

- Finance wisdom for the financially un-inclined
- Money isn’t typically a subject that inspires laughter, or even pleasant conversation. In fact, according to outmoded rules about manners, we’re not even supposed to talk about it at all. But as anyone who remembers Jen Sincero’s likeably iconoclastic tone from You Are A Badass can guess, this isn’t a book about following the herd or fitting in. Here, Sincero beautifully demolishes widely held stigmas about money—that it’s the root of all evil, that rich people are deplorable by nature—and provides real, actionable advice on how to reset your mindset about monetary success.

- A delight for book-loving parents and children alike
- As a book-loving parent, I instinctively gravitate to anarchic 5-year-old Matilda – a girl who prefers Steinbeck to screens, and is as mischievous as she is precociously in love with the written word. Roughly a billion words have been written on how to raise a happy child, but so few on how to raise a spunky bibliophile — and even fewer via the inimitable, shape-shifting voice of Kate Winslet, who fully embodies the villains and heroes in this Roald Dahl classic.

- Excellent, chilling work brought to life with impeccable narration
- An important work by any measure, Colson Whitehead’s take on the titular slave-escape route is delivered in unvarnished language that lays bare the heinousness of that darkest moment in our history. Bahni Turpin’s narration is at once chilling and subtly evocative as she shifts from slave to brutal slave owner; from depictions of harsh assaults to fleeting, beautiful moments of hope. It’s a listen that’s forever changed my perception of an ugly time I’d previously known primarily from matter-of-fact textbook accounts.

- Explore the unexpected effects of a dark side of the internet
- If you love exploring the fringes of society, you’ll want to binge Audible’s original podcast, The Butterfly Effect. Best-sellling writer Jon Ronson (Them, So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed) explores the consequences of the tech industry giving the world what it wanted: free porn. Lives were mangled. Fortunes were made. “It’s a mystery story, an adventure,” Ronson told Audible. “It’s also a new way of telling a story.” From a drab office in Montreal to the adult-filmmaking hub in the San Fernando Valley, Ronson talks to people who have made their living in the business of pleasure – and how that all changed when the internet stepped in. And, hear about the increasingly problematic consequences of that disruption.
