Acerca de esta escucha
In this Magical Realism novelette, two women have a playful friendship that sustains a shared dreamlike world they can inhabit temporarily by melting through the window. They always become the same age on the other side of that window in Amla's cob house that's shaped like a turtle. They enjoy cavorting through the giant leaves out there that are tinged with intense red along their edges. The wonder of their visits to that jungle plays a role in the regular-world village: the leaves where they really live grow larger than in nearby villages.
Citizens of the village the two women live in have always understood the primacy of the jungle, the intertwined natural life that should not be destroyed by modern technology and greed. But the head of the council is gaining persuasive power over the rest. Atar wants to convince them to sell out the land to the futurist, Bortez. Bortez would bring in the conveniences of modern technology, leading to a humano-centric selfish disruption of the natural harmony.
The two women try to sway Atar not to sell out the village.
But there are dangerous and forbidden deliciousnesses afoot.
And everything begins to disintegrate.
The universal folkloric hallucinatory tale has a Latin American feel to that transports us to the indigenous cultures, location by location, giving up independence rather than relying on nature and one another. The people in charge within the tribes and villages deal with the representatives of manipulative corporations.
This novelette exemplifies all the conventions of the Literary genre Magical Realism, demonstrating all its traditional tropes and philosophies.
