For a relatively short story (just over an hour), there’s a lot thrown in, and with all the tropes I’m actually surprised at how well it worked. In addition to age-gap and ice queen, we have a ignore-the-me-too-movement seduction of a new hire by the CEO, Instalust, Instalove, I’m straight except for you, a backstory of victimization of pedophilia, drugs and prostitution, corporate world success vs. doing what you want to be happy, blackmail, a corrupt sheriff, murder and the Chinese mafia! In an hour….really!
New college graduate MC Tessa experiences her first time lusting after a woman upon meeting MC CEO Veronica, and Veronica is only too happy to put another notch on whatever she notches. Their scene together is erotic and enjoyable. The insta-lust was very believable.
The insta-love felt rather more forced, and Veronica’s sharing of her childhood details after an afternoon quickie also felt forced. Perhaps if the story was a bit longer their love for each other could have been developed a bit more realistically.
The author narrates the book herself, and generally does a very good job. She’s best when voicing dialog; during the narrative portions she tends to rush a bit, as speakers often do when giving a presentation. She writes very steamy explicit sex scenes, but she’s at her most robotic when describing those scenes. Perhaps she’s more comfortable writing those scenes than saying them out loud for an audience. If she continues narrating her own books, I encourage her to slow down and make the sex scenes sound as erotic as they’re written.
This was an ambitious project to address so many things in a one-hour story, and I’m impressed with how well it turned out. I recommend “Her Hostile Takeover” with 3.7*
