Sherlock Holmes freut sich auf sein Klassentreffen und erscheint natürlich in Begleitung seines Freundes Dr. Watson und deren Beider Vermieterin Alice. Als einige Zeit später Alice jedoch einen der beiden Streithähne am Galgen baumelnd in der Damentoilette entdeckt, liegt der Verdacht auf den Täter nahe.

Es war ein Freitagabend im November. Holmes und Watson wurden von Inspektor Wolfford zu einem Tatort gerufen. Doch es war kein gewöhnlicher Raubüberfall, wie Holmes sofort feststellte, denn ein Detail passte nicht ins Bild. Weshalb wurden dem Opfer die Schuhe gestohlen, ihm seine teure Armbanduhr aber gelassen? Als tags darauf ein ungewöhnlicher Banküberfall stattfindet und es eine weitere Leiche mit derselben Tatwaffe gibt, steht für Holmes ein Zusammenhang der beiden Mordfälle, außer Frage.

Nach dem Selbstmord von Hershel Jackson befinden sich Holmes und Watson recht unfreiwillig an Bord der `Lady Jane´ und begeben sich somit auf die Seereise nach Südafrika. Während Holmes die Überfahrt zu gefallen scheint, leidet Holmes an der Seekrankheit und an der damit verbunden Übelkeit. Doch Holmes neue Bekanntschaft Hr. Vogt weiß Abhilfe. Zudem scheint er als Archäologe eine ganz besondere Leidenschaft für die großen Wikinger zu hegen.

Als der Hungerkünstler Ricardo Sacco zufällig einem jungen, hübschen Mädchen zu Hilfe eilt und es vor einem brutalen Überfall bewahrt, ist es auch schon um den jungen Mann geschehen. Zum Dank schenkt ihm Ines, die Tochter eines reichen Mannes, einen Brillanten. Ricardo Sacco kann sein Glück kaum fassen, doch es währt nicht lange. Sein langjähriger Feind, der sich als sein Doppelgänger ausgibt, ist ihm auf den Fersen. Und dann nimmt das Unglück seinen Lauf! Doch Holmes und Watson sind schnell zur Stelle.

Alle Spuren deuten auf den Neffen der reichen Lady, doch Holmes verfolgt seine eigenen Hinweise. Gilt es doch gleich zwei Mordfälle zu lösen.

Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson verweilen in Paris, als der Chef des Detektive-Büros "International" Holmes einlädt, ihn in den Pariser Adelsklub einzuführen. Dort wird Holmes Zeuge einer Wette zwischen Madame d'Atalide und Lord Curzon. Die Madame behauptet, einen Zirkus gewinnorientiert führen zu können, was in den Augen des Lords purer Unfug und absolut nicht möglich ist.Madame d'Atalide erwirbt daraufhin den Zirkus Angelo und es dauert nicht lange, bis dieser die ersten Gewinne abwirft. Doch Zeitgleich geschieht auch der erste Mord.

Holmes lebt an der Küste von Sussex, als er mit dem rätselhaften Tod des Lehrers McPherson konfrontiert wird. Der Mann lag tot am Ufer und hatte rote Striemen auf dem Rücken. Seine unverständlichen letzten Worte waren "die Löwenmähne". Während der Ermittlungen erleidet der Hauptverdächtige Murdoch die gleichen Wunden wie McPherson. In John George Woods Buch Out of Doors findet Holmes den Mörder: die auch unter dem Namen Löwenmähne bekannte Qualle Cyanea Capillata, die Gelbe Haarqualle.
