Distracting and Unfamiliar

I enjoyed the idea of Ella in a new adventure with a new partner, while Ripley is occupied with personal troubles. While the formula is essentially the same, the killer was just weird and undeveloped.
The new narrator’s voice doesn’t suit the tough FBI agent character, sounding more like somebody’s mother. She mispronounced basic words like “voila” pronounced as “Viola” which was further distracting.
Pierce’s repetitively used words and phrases such as “jerked her head/chin/thumb”, “detritus”, “stuck in her craw”, “gaping maw”, “like a _____’s wet dream”, among several others, had me tallying their uses instead of getting into the story.
I still plan to finish the series, but I really hope the remaining books don’t have all of the same problems.

Is AI writing Pierce’s recent books?

All of the Ella Dark books have seemed to be written using a set formula. It’s as if the first one went over well, so the same story was used each time with different characters, locations and villains’ motives.

The most recent handful of books have been riddled with repetitive/reused words and phrases, an abundance of alliteration, and an unreasonable number of metaphors and similes. Additionally, though the majority of the books cover only a few days worth of Ella and Ripley’s adventures, this book makes reference to Ella’s years and years of experience and sees her talking about her “old age”. It’s as if a stranger, or possibly a computer, made an attempt at writing the next episode using the aforementioned formula.

This one just wasn’t on par with previous books, and although I will probably have to finish the series, I won’t be recommending it, and I won’t be sad if it comes to an end.

Twisty Plot Fair Ending

Though a bit hard to follow at the onset, the story Drew in once I got my bearings. So my predictable twists abound, however, some turned out to be red herrings. A lot of information was thrown at the ending, which tidied it up into an almost too tidy bow Overall it was a good read.

Some sections seemed identical to parts of Douglas’s The Anatomy of Motive. Other than that I enjoyed learning about the development of the BSU/ISU and related details.

Adventure and Mystery

The author’s detailed and descriptive language transported me to Scotland, as if I were there with Isla, observing her whole adventure. As the mystery unfolded, I was unable to put down the book until the end.

The narrator’s use of changing voices and accents, and the lack of any obvious errors kept me there in the story, deepening the experience.

Thrilling story, great narration

This was an exciting thriller/mystery with a twisty plot. The narrator skillfully tells the story using multiple voices and accents. Only occasionally does she allow one character’s voice or accent to spill over into another’s line. Great listen.

Clever story, flat narration

I’m into the series so far. Would like to hear more inflection from the narrator, as she was quite monotone in her delivery. Audible corrections or additions had a different sound quality and were quite distracting.
