Historia
Beginning in the predawn hours of airports in the Northeast, we meet the ticket agents who unknowingly usher terrorists onto their flights, and the flight attendants inside the hijacked planes. In New York City, first responders confront a scene of unimaginable horror at the Twin Towers. From a secret bunker underneath the White House, officials watch for incoming planes on radar. Aboard the small number of unarmed fighter jets in the air, pilots make a pact to fly into a hijacked airliner if necessary to bring it down.

A remarkable book

Testimonies from dozens of people as they recall that unforgettable day that reshaped the world. Not just factual history, but personal and emotional history. I can’t recommend this book too highly.

Historia
Long fascinated with the Mexican Revolution and the vicious border wars of the early 20th century, Winston Groom brings to life a much-forgotten period of history in this sprawling saga of heroism, injustice, and love. An episodic novel set in six parts, El Paso pits the legendary Pancho Villa, a much-feared outlaw and revolutionary, against a thrill-seeking railroad tycoon known as the Colonel, whose fading fortune is tied up in a colossal ranch in Chihuahua, Mexico.

Scattered, repetitive, a bit boring
Revisado: 01-31-24
Perhaps because I'm not a huge fan of westerns, but this book was a disappointment. I bought it because I have thoroughly enjoyed every other book I've read by Winston Groom--and because I live in Texas--but this book dragged on and on. Many of the characters I expected to play a larger part in the story, don't. They just seem to drop by the wayside after a bit, figuratively and often literally (and gruesomely). Most of the characters are only thinly developed, even those given an interesting introduction. Maybe there were just too many characters. But after introducing the Colonel and Arthur at the beginning & developing their stories a bit, this book goes all over the place. It was confusing in geography and history and bounced from scene to scene & person to person so much it was hard to care about any one person or event. Scattered, is how I would sum up the book as a whole.

Historia
In the early 1960s, JFK declared that science would take us to the moon. He also declared that science would make the “remote reaches of the mind accessible” and cure psychiatric illness with breakthrough medications. We were walking on the moon within the decade. But today, psychiatric cures continue to elude us—as does the mind itself. Why is it that we still don’t understand how the mind works? What is the difference between the mind and the brain? And given all that we still don’t know, how can we make insightful, transformative choices about our psychiatric conditions?

Mixed feelings about this book
Revisado: 01-15-24
The book is well written. I enjoyed the personal stories, but I feel the writer is too hard on and too dismissive of psychiatrists and psychiatry. Medication doesn’t help everyone, but it helps many. I’m concerned people struggling with depression or anxiety or mental illness may be persuaded by this book to try to go without appropriately prescribed medication on the basis of the 2 or 3 success stories herein.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Ponderous
Revisado: 08-11-23
Way too long and convoluted. Misery and heartache across three generations. I only kept going because I felt I had too many hours invested to stop. I know I’m in the minority here, but this book was an exercise in tedium and eye rolling at romanticism of expression and contrived plot(s)—when anything was happening at all.

Historia
Almost six million Americans—about one in every ten people over the age of sixty-five—have Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias, and this number is projected to more than double by 2050. What is it like to live with and amid this increasingly prevalent condition—an affliction that some fear more than death? In My Father’s Brain, the distinguished physician and author Sandeep Jauhar sets his father’s descent into Alzheimer’s alongside his own journey toward understanding this disease and how it might best be coped with, if not cured.

Highly recommend
Revisado: 06-21-23
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a loved one struggling with any form of dementia but especially Alzheimer’s. Read it to know you not alone in your grief, frustration and even anger. Dr. Juahar comes at the disease both from the perspective of a medical professional and from the perspective of a son. The relationships among the three Juahar siblings provide insight into how a family as a whole is affected by this disease and how equally loving & caring family members can differ in identifying the best way forward. I rarely stop to write a review, but this book deserves it.

Historia
The year is 1876. Warring Indian tribes still populate America's western territories, even as lawless gold-rush towns begin to mark the landscape. In much of the country, it is still illegal to espouse evolution. Against this backdrop two monomaniacal paleontologists pillage the Wild West, hunting for dinosaur fossils while surveilling, deceiving, and sabotaging each other in a rivalry that will come to be known as the Bone Wars.

I rarely write reviews, but I hope to maybe be able to save someone from this long, dull listen. I didn't enjoy The Dead Key either, and I know I'm in the minority regarding both. But with so many well-written and truly suspenseful books out there, I'm sorry I wasted my time listening to this.

It seemed to go on forever...
Revisado: 03-08-19
...and I don't mean that in a good way. Usually I enjoy Tana French's style of writing, but I felt my life being squeezed out of me by a crushing load of similes and metaphors in this lengthy, meandering book that's in need of some tightening up by a good editor. I gave Performance 2 stars because of the good work of Stephen Hogan, although even after almost 20 hours I still had trouble telling the girls apart from the narration. Lara Hutchison was simply over-the-top and incredibly irritating to listen to. Part of that could be the seemingly endless repetitions of supposed teen-aged slang and phrases and text shorthand spoken out loud. The mystical parts were never explained and didn't seem to add anything at all. I don't understand why they were included. All in all, my least favorite Tana French book & one I would not recommend to anyone.

Historia
In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of 19th-century surgery on the eve of profound transformation. She conjures up early operating theaters - no place for the squeamish - and surgeons, working before anesthesia, who were lauded for their speed and brute strength. They were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. A young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister would solve the deadly riddle and change the course of history.
