Historia
Star, a young survivor of the Sand Creek Massacre, is brought to the Fort Marion prison castle, where he is forced to learn English and practice Christianity by Richard Henry Pratt, an evangelical prison guard who will go on to found the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, an institution dedicated to the eradication of Native history, culture, and identity. A generation later, Star’s son, Charles, is sent to the school, where he is brutalized by the man who was once his father’s jailer. Under Pratt’s harsh treatment, Charles clings to moments he shares with a young fellow student, Opal Viola.

Historia
Speaking from the cultural viewpoint of the Lakota of the northern Plains, the author discusses the evolution of native cultures to fit within the environment and adapt to it, as opposed to changing it drastically or wholesale to fit human needs and comforts. He suggests that changing our contemporary thinking in relating to the earth in a less harmful way does not mean a drastic change in lifestyles....

Historia
Lately, seventh grader Nizhoni Begay has been able to detect monsters, like that man in the fancy suit who was in the bleachers at her basketball game. Turns out he's Mr. Charles, her dad's new boss at the oil and gas company, and he's alarmingly interested in Nizhoni and her brother, Mac, their Navajo heritage, and the legend of the Hero Twins. When Dad disappears the next day, leaving behind a message that says "Run!", the siblings and Nizhoni's best friend, Davery, are thrust into a rescue mission, which can only be done with the help of Navajo gods.

Great Storytelling

The narrator did a phenomenal job when speaking Diné Bizaad (Navajo language). I applaud Rebecca Roanhorse for preserving Diné (Navajo) culture & beliefs through her novels. This book can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages.

Winifred has lived in the apartment above the cemetery office with her father, who works in the crematorium, all her life, close to her mother's grave. With her sixteenth birthday only days away, Winifred has settled into a lazy summer schedule, lugging her obese Chihuahua around the grounds in a squeaky red wagon to visit the neglected gravesides and nursing a serious crush on her best friend, Jack.

Thoroughly Enjoyed!
Revisado: 06-28-23
This coming-of-age story is brilliantly told in a different way than all the others. Cherie Dimeline is a fantastic storyteller!! I only have one complaint about the Audible version -the narration was a bit inconsistent. There were a few repeats/overlaps with words, and having a second narrator was confusing at times. I would recommend the actual book for this one.

Captivating!!
Revisado: 06-01-23
Great storytelling is continued from 'Firekeeper's Daughter'. I love that Daunis is now portrayed as the strong and resilient Auntie in this story. 'Warrior Girl Unearthed' is fascinating on it's own, but if you've also read 'Firekeeper's Daughter', it feels like you're already in the know of some of the family secrets.

Historia
Louise Erdrich's latest novel, The Sentence, asks what we owe to the living, the dead, to the reader and to the book. A small independent bookstore in Minneapolis is haunted from November 2019 to November 2020 by the store's most annoying customer. Flora dies on All Souls' Day, but she simply won't leave the store. Tookie, who has landed a job selling books after years of incarceration that she survived by reading "with murderous attention", must solve the mystery of this haunting.
