Historia
London, 1944. While the Luftwaffe makes its final assault on the already battered British capital, Londoners rush through the streets, seeking underground shelter in the midst of the city's blackout. When the panic subsides, other things begin to surface along with London's war-worn citizens. A severed arm is discovered by a group of children playing at an East End bomb site, and when Scotland Yard's Detective Sergeant Frederick Troy arrives at the scene, it becomes apparent that the dismembered body is not the work of a V-1 rocket.

I liked the narrator and it moved pretty well. I just thought some things could have been revealed earlier.

Historia
It's summer on the Jersey Shore. Children play on the beach. Husbands are off working in the city. And the surf echoes in the night. Here, in this perfect place, a serial killer has no worries in the world - except choosing the next victim. Cam Hastings has come to Long Beach Island with her teenage daughter and the hope that maybe she can save her failed marriage. Cam has never stopped loving her husband, Mike, nor has she been able to outrun her flaws and demons - a vanished mother, a lost sister, and the ugly visions she has of missing children.

Good story line
Revisado: 01-01-21
I liked the story but gave it a four because there was too much back and forth on the timeline. For instance, Kathy's revelation could certainly have come sooner with a much greater impact. Instead, it came at a crucial moment when it was like, "who cares about that?" There are a few more instances like that but over-all I liked the book and the reader. I would recommend it to a friend.

Great dog book!
Revisado: 12-29-20
I gave the story a 4 instead of a 5 because it was a lot more about a police dog than about a mystery. Loved the details of the interaction between the deputy and the dog. It really points out that a dog is only as good as its handler. Also touches on the difficulties some children have because of their parents.

Historia
Maisie Dobbs isn't just any young housemaid. Through her own natural intelligence - and the patronage of her benevolent employers - she works her way into college at Cambridge. After the War I and her service as a nurse, Maisie hangs out her shingle back at home: M. DOBBS, TRADE AND PERSONAL INVESTIGATIONS. But her very first assignment soon reveals a much deeper, darker web of secrets, which will force Maisie to revisit the horrors of the Great War and the love she left behind.

Moving story
Revisado: 12-29-20
This story is wonderfully moving. It describes some of the horrific details of WWI from a nurse's perspective without being too graphic. It weaves in the backstory of how and why Maisie ended up in France, while developing characters who will return in future books. Ms. Winspear does an excellent job of describing what life was like in post and pre-war England. She obviously did her homework and shared what she learned with her readers in an entertaining manner. I have listened to the second book and it only gets better. I have to disagree with the reviewer who said this first book is a waste. I think it adds depth to the next book and probably those that follow. If you are looking for an enjoyable and informative book from WWI era England, without all the sex and bad language, you will love this series,
