Historia
The beloved actor shares fascinating and powerful lessons from the science of communication and teaches listeners to improve the way they relate to others using improv games, storytelling, and their own innate mind-reading abilities. With his trademark humor and frankness, Alan Alda explains what makes the out-of-the-box techniques he developed after his years as the host of Scientific American Frontiers so effective.

Great Value for Applied Improv Facilitators
Revisado: 05-23-21
A good read for any communicator, especially those who have to communicate in STEM. However, it is deeply heartening and validating for AI practitioners. These are the very topics we tend to teach, and here we are equipped with a rich bibliography of Alda's experience and supporting research.

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Amazing Performance of Shelley's prose
Revisado: 10-24-18
For anyone who's ever had to read this in high school and struggled with the language, this performance might make you a believer. The language is so unapologetically ornate and rich in its antiquity, and Stevens really brings it to life. I might listen to it again just to hear some of those phrasings. if I had a kid in high school who had to face this book, I would make sure they had this recording.

Historia
Strengthening, calming, and stabilizing the mind is the essential first step in accomplishing nearly any goal. Growing up American with a Tibetan twist, Sakyong Mipham talks to Westerners as no one can: in idiomatic English with stories and wisdom from American culture and the great Buddhist teachers. Turning the Mind Into an Ally makes it possible for anyone to achieve peace and clarity in their lives.

easy* intro to meditation
Revisado: 07-03-18
meditation is easy. meditation isn't easy. however, I found the author very helpful in his use of stories and analogies to help guide the reader through the ancient Concepts he discusses. if you're interested in Shambhala practice, I would start with his father's book first, Shambhala the sacred path of the warrior

Historia
A posthumous recipient of the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement, Marion Zimmer Bradley reinvented - and rejuvenated - the King Arthur mythos with her extraordinary Mists of Avalon series. In this epic work, Bradley follows the arc of the timeless tale from the perspective of its previously marginalized female characters: Celtic priestess Morgaine, Gwenhwyfar, and High Priestess Viviane.

more important now than ever
Revisado: 06-21-18
I first heard of this book over 20 years ago in college. a lot of my female Pagan friends found it very important. I really wish I had read it sooner. set as a Chronicle of Arthurian Legend, this is an incredible reflection on the need for religious pluralism and tolerance and the dangers of patriarchy and fanaticism. and yet it's told in such a way that it's very hard to outright hate any figure in the story. Davina Porter's reading is amazing. hearing she contends with easily 30 different important characters and manages to make it seem like you're hearing that many different voices, without resorting to caricature. one caveat, this certainly is an unabridged version. it took me several weeks to get through it, and some of the courtly chatter can seem quite endless. but still, a great way to immerse yourself in a very believable take on Arthurian Britain.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Great story that makes sci-fi believable: delves into chemistry, engineering, politics, and economics. Great female hero as well.

Historia
At the height of the McCarthy era, an experimental theater troupe set up shop in a bar near the University of Chicago. Via word-of-mouth, astonished crowds packed the ad-hoc venue to see its unscripted, interactive, consciousness-raising style. From this unlikely seed grew the Second City, the massively influential comedy theater troupe, and its offshoots - the Groundlings, Upright Citizens Brigade, SNL, and a slew of others. Sam Wasson charts the meteoric rise of improv in this richly reported, scene-driven narrative.

good, but not comprehensive
Revisado: 04-13-18
Positioned as a canvas of improvisation in America but ignores a lot that happened outside of Chicago, LA, and NYC. Leaves out ComedySportz, Theater Sports, Brave New Workshop, etc. Best for diehard comedy fans who want to learn more about their favorite tv/movie stars, their early days and influences. Still, I recommend it.
