Historia
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

You will be enthralled
Revisado: 01-26-12
What made the experience of listening to The Night Circus the most enjoyable?
I think this could possibly be the best book I have ever read. It weaves a mesmerizing atmosphere of dark and seductive mystery, much along the Tim Burton style. It spins a love story that teases you, yet gives you the richness of a wonderful magical circus that is more than illusion, but real magic. It weaves a spell you won't want to end. I kept prolonging finishing the book because even though I wanted to know how it ended, I didn't want to leave the circus. I would highly recommend (and have) this book to anyone.
What other book might you compare The Night Circus to and why?
Would compare it to Tim Burton movies...
Have you listened to any of Jim Dale’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I don't believe so. His voice is perfectly suited to this book.
If you could take any character from The Night Circus out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Oh Marco, of course...a very sexy man to be sure.
Any additional comments?
I totally loved this book and wish it would go on and on. Fell in love with the characters. Hope the author writes more like this.

Kept My Interest
Revisado: 10-21-09
This is an excellent book for this genre. It is well-written and the characters are well rounded and vivid. The plot is interesting and I didn't get bored at all - even the descriptive segments were interesting. A few spots got a bit predictable but if you don't mind that (which I don't), it holds enough plot twists and turns to keep your interest. The reader did a good job, however he needs to work on his female characters. This is right up there with the best of Michael Connelly, only maybe a bit edgier. His "Reacher" character is definitely out there and a force to be reconned with!

Good but not great
Revisado: 06-08-09
Though James Patterson is one of my favorite authors, this book was not as good as they usually are. The investigation was not complete and in that he missed the opportunity to enrich the story. I wasn't satified by the ending or the general writing.
Though the book wasn't really bad, it's not the kind that would get you hooked on Patterson books, so if it is your first I'd suggest you keep trying. They get better.

Excellent
Revisado: 06-08-09
Another top-knotched thriller from an excellent author...Michael Connelly, and particularly his Harry Bosch series, has become one of my most favorite authors. He's right up there with James Patterson - every bit as fascinating and well written.
This story had me hooked right up to the end. We're used to being frustrated along with Harry, both at the criminals and the institution (LAPD) he works for, and this one really heats up. His depictions of LA are spot-on (I know because I work here), and he clearly has some inside knowledge of this town. The character Bosch is flesh and blood as he has described him. I can clearly picture both his physicality and personality and he's as real as they come. The action moves constantly and the plot is precise and tricky. There are tons of twists and turns, with about as few lose ends and any novel I've read. The ending is clean and satisfying, while still having the flavor of the entire story. Nothing "tacked on" just to wrap things up, as so many other authors do. The story flows and is cohesive.
From an author who consistently puts out great books, this is truly one of his best and you won't be disappointed. I highly recommend.

Historia
The Republicans are coming to St. Paul for their convention. Throwing a big party is supposed to be fun, but crashing the party are a few hard cases the police would rather have stayed away. Chief among them is a crew of professional stick-up men who've spotted several lucrative opportunities, ranging from political moneymen with briefcases full of cash to that armored-car warehouse with the weakness in its security system.

Disappointed
Revisado: 06-08-09
I expected better from this book. Overall, I found it hard to get through. Too much detail in the wrong places that lead nowhere. You had to listen to all kinds of, frankly, boring detail to get to the action. The opportunities where the plot could get interesting or lead down a path which would make it good were missed. The ending was not exciting but more of a relief. I think that this author has potential, but this was clearly not one of his better efforts.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 07-23-08
I enjoyed this book. It had a nice pace that never got boring and a plot that kept you guessing. From a writers' point of view it probably had a lot that could be criticized, but if you suspend your critique and go a long for the ride you won't be disappointed. Surprise ending - perhaps a bit too much of a surprise, but overall an enjoyable read.

Historia
For decades, Fred Burton was a key figure in international counterterrorism and domestic spy craft. As a member of the State Department's Diplomatic Security Service in the mid 1980s, he was on the front lines of America's first campaign against terror. Now, in this hard-hitting memoir, Burton emerges from the shadows to reveal who he is, what he has accomplished, and the threats that lurk unseen except by an experienced, world-wise few. Told in a no-holds-barred, gripping, nuanced style, this behind-the scenes account of one counterterrorism agent's life and career is a riveting listen.

Lotta potatoes - not enough meat
Revisado: 07-23-08
Though this was interesting, there was not as much excitement in it as I thought there would be, nor were there a lot of (or any?) facts that are not public knowledge. I'm sure there's a lot more that could have been said but the author clearly plays it safe...
I think I'll stick to fiction.

Half a Book
Revisado: 05-08-08
I've read many books (and listened to them too) that had no conclusive ending and it doesn't generally bother me, but this one cuts off so abruptly that I had to check to make sure I wasn't missing a file. It is LITERALLY only 1/2 a book. So if you can put up with that, the story is not bad. It's a little too heavy on the romance novel kind of genre and there are a lot of explanations on the "powers" that I THOUGHT they were leading up to (but never go into in depth), but it's fairly interesting. Not a heavy read, so if you're looking for a little escapism and don't mind that it is predictable, then go ahead. I do still feel gyped because they didn't publish the whole story...a blatant attempt to sell two books instead of one.

Revisado: 02-08-08
Patterson is a master of this genre. His characters are creepy and his plots are very interesting. I think he was a bit ambitious in trying to bring in two serial killers in this book and in taking the plot in so many directions almost simultaneously, however he somehow pulls it together. Though I would have preferred he explain more about the why's, it's still an interesting romp with one of the best super-hero detective/therapists around - the famous Alex Cross.

In 1998, William Queen was a veteran law-enforcement agent with a lifelong love of motorcycles and a lack of patience with paperwork. When a "confidential informant" made contact with his boss at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, offering to take an agent inside the San Fernando chapter of the Mongols (the scourge of Southern California, and one of the most dangerous gangs in America), Queen jumped at the chance.

Fascinating!
Revisado: 02-08-08
This book was very captivating from the beginning. It was very well written and well read. It had an edgy feel that kept me interested, always expecting things to blow up. A real character study - it reminds us that there is a degree of humanity in all people, even those whom we dehumanize. This story shows the conflicting emotions felt by undercover officers who cannot help but to be drawn in by the people they meet. It shows his constant struggle to retain parts of himself as he got further and further into character. As he got to know and like these bikers, Billy had to keep reminding himself these were dangerous men who would kill him as soon as look at him, and when he stopped reminding himself, something would happen to shake him back to reality. I would have liked to hear more about the 'afterwards', however I think we get some of the picture on the extreme sacrifice this man made for his job and his own convictions. I do hope he was well rewarded for his efforts!
