A remarkable story. Women need to be reminded of our resilience and bravery in the throes of misogyny and fear of our power.

I am humbled and grateful for this beautiful book as I was by the authors earlier work. As a native of Kentucky, I am so delighted by a story that evokes the proud, graceful, fierce and tenacious spirit of the people and landscape of the Eatern reaches of the state. Thank you!

I was surprised that this was a history of both a place, a business, and most of all the rise of an industry! Great stuff for a bourbon nerd but also a good example of marketing, business planning, leadership and enterprise. Highly readable and recommended.

Historia
In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century, the stand-off continued—through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021, have spurred questions about the country’s future. Spanning more than five centuries, Cuba provides us with a front-row seat as we witness the evolution of the modern nation.

Relevant, fascinating, and important
Revisado: 08-07-22
This is a must read for anyone -and that should be most Americans-to understand the sweeping and complicated history of Cuba and in particular, her relationship to the United States. If we are to have peace and moral comfort, we must revisit Obama’s opening of Cuba and repudiate the greed and jealousy of the Trump years as well as the dreadful policies, which have taken different forms since Columbus first landed in 1492. I found this history well written, compelling, and of course, filled with events and insights I never had presented though 18 years of “formal” education. Read it!!

Historia
This ambitious, electrifying work traces the harrowing journey of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, a beautifully illuminated Hebrew manuscript created in 15th-century Spain. When it falls to Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book expert, to conserve this priceless work, the series of tiny artifacts she discovers in its ancient binding—an insect wing fragment, wine stains, salt crystals, a white hair—only begin to unlock its deep mysteries.

Once again, Brooks weaves a fascinating and spellbinding history of an “inanimate” object bringing it to life in its provenance of artists, scribes, binders, and saviors in a backdrop of war, religion, sacrifice, and redemption. A wonderful read for this old librarian and bibliophile. Highly recommended!!

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Magnificent
Revisado: 07-13-22
Admittedly, as a retired librarian I absolutely loved this story. But even more so, I found it so provocative in the reflection it empowers to rethink my own life, my regrets, and to think about all the good things, relationships, accomplishments and sheer abundance of my life. This is not only a great, compelling read, but a therapeutic essential in this time of chaos, confusion, and disappointment. Do read it. Embrace it. Learn from it. Thank you!

A hero for our time
Revisado: 07-10-22
My next read will absolutely be Nancy Wake’s autobiography, the White Mouse. I was riveted by this novel. The fierce resilience, independence, loyalty and commitment in this woman, and the devotion and respect she earned in her leadership are an inspiration to girls and women today who will have to find the means of resistance, resilience, and persistence. It is what Nancy would want of us.
