Historia
Being you is not as simple as it sounds. Somehow, within each of our brains, billions of neurons create our everyday conscious experience. But how does this happen? Anil Seth's unique and groundbreaking theory of what it means to 'be you' challenges our understanding of perception and reality, doing for brain science what Dawkins did for evolutionary biology. Being You is an accessible, inspiring and eye-opening exploration of consciousness by one of the most remarkable pioneers working in science today.

Be prepared to change your mind about your mind

This is one of the most insightful and important books on consciousness in print today. What a delight. I cannot recommend it enough. Both audio and physical books will not disappoint (I bought both). Simply mind blowing!

Confidently expressed pseudoscience
Revisado: 02-12-24
I tried hard to line this book but it was filled with to the brim with pseudoscientific nonsense from start to finish. It encouraged strategies known to undermine learning such as multitasking, massed practice, superficial questioning, learning styles and more. The worst part about it was the astounding confidence in which these falsehoods were touted. While there was an occasional pearl of wisdom here and there (if you throw enough mud some of it sticks), you’re better off saving your time and money and reading a booking that is written by somebody with some knowledge of the learning sciences. This book is worse than a waste of time; it is misleading.

This audiobook was funny, stupid and sad at the same time. It was damn good. I would highly recommend to people who like dark humour.

Historia
For as long as we've studied the mind, we've believed that information flowing from our senses determines what our mind perceives. But as our understanding of neuroscience and psychology has advanced in the last few decades, a provocative and hugely powerful new view has flipped this assumption on its head. The brain is not a passive receiver, but an ever-active predictor. At the forefront of this cognitive revolution is widely acclaimed philosopher and cognitive scientist Andy Clark, who has synthesized his ground-breaking work on the predictive brain.

A New Way of Seeing the World
Revisado: 06-02-23
This was a really interesting, accessible, and unpretentious look at the emerging field of predictive processing theory.
Pros: read authentically by the author and communicated in a simple way for non-scientific but curious readers. Anyone who has dabbled in this topic will appreciate just how complex it can be but I suspect a bright 12 year old could understand most of this; not because it is simple but because it was masterfully communicated.
Cons: the ‘hacking the brain’ chapter was easily the weakest chapter and supported by speculative evidence (at best). The author even goes so far as to acknowledge this, which was strange. Unfortunately it stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the otherwise excellent and well evidenced preceding chapters. It was a shame to finish on this relatively low note, given that it was the last full chapter. That said, I would still strongly recommend this book as the vast majority of it was outstanding. Had it not been for the hacking the brain chapter I would’ve given it five stars.
We should be grateful for wonderful scientists and philosophers like Andy Clark

Historia
Maya loves to cook with her grandmother - her Halmunee - to connect with the rich family history associated with each dish, a history Maya's mom would prefer stayed in the past. While cooking with Halmunee, something remarkable happens - the food creates such a strong memory that Maya and Halmunee are transported back in time through the memory itself. Halmunee explains that the women in her family have the gift of time travel through food and Maya can do it too, if she practices.

Sequel!!!
Revisado: 05-12-23
This story was amazing with all of it’s twists and turns but my favourite part about it was the adorable relationship between Jeff and Maya.
I really wanna a sequel but like them all grown up and……….well……… married. They would make such a cute couple and I’d like to see their future children going on an adventure of their own. In my head they would be discovering the time that their grandpa (Mayas dad) got lost in and bringing him back to Maya and her mum all while exploring their abilities and finding the golden orchid. Please consider this idea!!!

Historia
It’s two months before Amelia’s big audition for the Mystwick School of Musicraft. If she gets in, she will learn to spin music into powerful magic - but her Gran has one last-ditch plan to persuade her out of it: sports camp. A week of softball, sprinting, and sweaty socks isn't exactly Amelia’s idea of a good time - in fact, she's deeply, appallingly unathletic. By the end of day one, she’s puked her guts out in track, gotten a black eye in no-contact flag football, and firmly established herself as the Least Valuable Player at camp.

INCREDIBLE
Revisado: 04-14-23
I absolutely loved this audio book. It was relatable, funny and had a great story line as well as crazy plot twists. I especially liked hearing Amelia recount her adventures at camp sweat lake when she (spoiler alert!) finally gets to her dream school as I at last new what it all meant. I would highly recommend it to everyone no matter what text type that like as it has a bit of everything in it.

Why does it feel like something to be alive? For one of the boldest thinkers in neuroscience, solving this puzzle has been a lifetime's quest. Now at last, Mark Solms, who discovered the brain mechanism for dreaming, has arrived at his answer. More than just a philosophical argument, the Free Energy theory will profoundly change how you understand your own existence.

Deeply thoughtful and original.
Revisado: 02-03-23
This was one of the most deeply thoughtful and unconventional approaches to consciousness that I have ever read (I’m a researcher in a separate field but keep tabs on what’s happening in the consciousness space). Complex ideas explained in accessible ways, well narrated, logically ordered,
and with wide reaching implications. That said, it is not a pop-psych book or light read per se, and will most likely challenge and stretch many peoples’ thinking without any cliche or cringy moments. Highly recommended.

In How You Decide: The Science of Human Decision Making, Professor Ryan Hamilton, associate professor of marketing at Emory University's Goizueta Business School, uses research revealed via the scientific method to understand and explain human decision making. While his easygoing manner and anecdotes about surprising and bizarre choices will keep you enthralled, Professor Hamilton also shares what decision science has revealed through empirically tested theories.

Breadth, depth, and a little bit of humor
Revisado: 07-19-17
Prof. Hamilton managed to walk the fine line between too much and too little information on the topic of human decision making; crafting a course appealing for both amateurs and those who're familiar with but in need of a refresher and update. I loved the systematic approach to selecting material not from the intriguing fringes; but instead with a collection of robust decision models and theories that have proven themselves over time. Among these are many of Khaneman and Tversky's pet theories (and a whole lecture on prospect theory), Herbert Simon's bounded rationality (satisficing as a main feature), self regulation (with ego depletion as a central feature, although - I am aware that this subtopic has recently been claimed to be scientifically dubious), framing, availability, evaluability, halo effects, reason based decision making, and much more. Prof Hamilton did a masterful job at staying on topic and including only the most germane material - with a medium sized bucket of humor and humility to make the content more enjoyable and keep listeners engaged. I have struggled to think of any areas of improvement and weakness other than a slight lack of coherence among topics in terms of an overarching narrative- but I suspect that's because these were presented as separate lectures and not linking material in a single book. Overall, a wonderful job that deserves 4.5 to 5 stars.

Well picked cherries from field of psychology
Revisado: 05-26-17
This series has little to do with 'myth busting' and more to do with a taste testing tour of many emerging and misunderstood areas in psychology. It's also less to about the brain and more about cognitive and behavioral psychology. Nevertheless, Indre does a brilliant job or surveying the literature and takes great care in refraining from pop psychology hyperbole and borrowing on the credibility of science to make her career. This book was not comprehensive on any topic but was masterfully succinct on many. I especially liked her tour of how technology impacts our attention and intelligence for good or bad. Other notable topics include our sleep and our ability to perform depending on it, how we use more than 10% of our brains, neuroplasticity, and cognitive biases. Overall, this series is a surprisingly pleasant treatise on psychology's latest findings that strays from its stated topic (brain myths) in a wonderful way.
