Historia
As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

What a lovely book
Revisado: 10-28-24
I wholeheartedly enjoyed this story. It offered great, nuanced characters, nice world building, a good plot that wasn’t too contrived, and even a twist I didn’t see coming. And the narrator was wonderful.

Takes the low road every time
Revisado: 07-10-24
This was my first time reading/hearing a book by author Michelle Heard. I really wanted to like this book because I like the ideas of redemption and soul mates. However, the description of the male main character felt completely at odds with what the author seemed to be intending. She made him so unlikable at first that it was impossible for me to get past it. SPOILERS AHEAD: the female main character suffered from PTSD from previous child abuse. The male main character abused her when he first met her (including holding a gun to her head and forced sex), and he felt no guilt about that at all ... UNTIL he discovered she'd been abused by someone else. Then, apparently, abuse was terrible, and the former abuser deserved death. He, however, got a pass, not just from himself, but also the female main character, who forgave all. Also, the male main character was angry to the point of torture and murder when others attacked his wife and sister. Yet he seemed to have conveniently forgotten his prior abuse of his wife; he also excused the kidnapping and (presumed) rape of a 17-year-old child by one of his friends. I really cannot recommend this book to anyone. I'm sorry I finished it, and I won't be reading any more books by this author.

Historia
Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting. After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived. Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers.

The action scenes are great. And the character growth is fun to read/listen to. Can’t wait for book 3.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Really enjoyed it overall
Revisado: 05-24-23
I liked the world building and the characters (for the most part, with the exception of the main bad guy who had no redeeming characteristics, which I find tiresome). Other than that, a good story. I’d like to know what happens next.

I love Ilona Andrews books, and I liked this It tied up all the loose ends. It just lacked the usual spark that I love. Still I don’t regret listening.

Historia
Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

More sex/love story than paranormal mystery
Revisado: 06-13-22
Although I like a good paranormal romance and don't mind sex in books, I thought there was too much romance and sex in what I thought was more of a paranormal mystery/thriller. I thought the world-building was pretty good, and I thought some of the dialogue was funny, but every time I'd get interested in the plot line, there'd be more sex ... usually fairly graphic. P.S. Also, since I'm not gay, it's possible I'm just the wrong audience for this. While I was listening, I was thinking sympathetically to myself of all the years of "straight" romance/sex books that the LGBTQ community read/listened to without other options. So I'M GLAD those options exist now.

Creative and hopeful
Revisado: 06-13-22
While the subject matter is serious (the potential end of sentient life as we know it), the story isn't TOO dark. It's entertaining, interesting, and in the end, hopeful (although there is a small cliffhanger that does not impact the completion of the story but hints at more story to tell). There are many different species with different thoughts and desires. Even at over 18 hours, I was still looking forward to reading/listening to more). The narrator was good and did a good job of distinguishing between each character's voice.

I liked this more than I expected to
Revisado: 06-13-22
I didn't like the first book in this section of the series (the first three focused on another main character, while the fourth focused on another main character, which is the same in this fifth book). That was a surprise for me because I LOVE Ilona Andrews books. But this book redeemed my misgivings. With a little creative story-telling and additional backstory, I got on board with the new story line. Now I'm looking forward to the next book.
