Historia
Escape to the sun and head off to Italy, with the wonderfully warm Leonie Mack! TV journalist Lou feels battered and bruised after her divorce from Phil, the father of her daughter Edie. Her confidence and sense of fun have steadily been drained away, and she isn’t sure who she is any more. When the opportunity arises to accompany Edie on a music camp in Italy for a month in the summer, Lou jumps at the chance for new adventures, new horizons and new friends. The hazy warmth of the summer sun, shining brightly over the stunning Lake Garda, slowly brings Lou back to life.

This Book Destroys Me Every Time
Revisado: 06-10-23
I read this in hard copy for the first time in 2008, and it blew a crater in my heart over the breathtakingly beautiful and well done story telling. I went on to reread it every few years, then to choose it for various book clubs for deeper discussion, and now here I am finally listening to the audio version. Well, I thought this story couldn’t possibly have wrenched any more tears out of me than it already had, but there I was in the shower with it playing on my speaker, and I was bawling so hard that I wanted to scream out loud just to feel better. I guess I’ll never stop being moved by this book. I’ll never stop loving Sarah Agnes Prine. And most of all, I’ll never stop wishing that Jack Elliot was real, and that he was my husband! 😂
Narrator was fine, but better when I slowed it down a little. Definitely worth a credit.

Historia
From the prolific M. C. Beaton, comes a Regency romance where love flourishes in the most unexpected places. From the top of his flawlessly groomed head to the waxed tips of his fashionable shoes, Lord Andrew Childe was every inch the perfect gentleman. But Andrew's arrogant composure was almost always shattered by the impertinent Penelope Mortimer, an achingly lovely country beauty who had a clear knack for ruffling his lordship's feathers.

Good! But “Quadrille” was better ;)
Revisado: 06-05-23
Based on reviews, I expected this to be good and Quadrille (same author) to be terrible. Wrong! So wrong. This was fun, and I liked it! But I was surprised to find Quadrille was even better. Just keep in mind that reviews can be misleading. Don’t let them bum you out!
Have fun!

Historia
Love and jealousy abound in this playful romance, set during the British Regency. Everyone in the ton knew that Lord Hubert Challenge had married country mouse Mary Tyre for her dowry, but no one had yet guessed that Mary had actually fallen in love with her husband! And she was willing to try anything - sumptuous clothes, a saucy manner, even flirting with another man - to get her handsome husband's attention…until she learned that two could play at that particular game.

Revisado: 06-05-23
I let the bad reviews keep me away from this for a long time!
I needn’t have worried. It was delightful.
In fact, I really liked that the (SPOILER!)
original married couples from the beginning of the book all stayed together by the end! Nice change.
Have fun, enjoy 👍

Historia
The local society could only speculate how a pair of turtledoves would cope as the guests of the scandalous Lady Dacey. Surely she would attempt to corrupt them - an act that both Pamela Perryworth and Honoria Goodham would see as welcome entertainment in their rigid, joyless lives. Though Mrs. Perryworth is married - most unhappily - and the young Honoria has a cloying tendency to read too much scripture, the purity and loveliness of both ladies nonetheless inflames the senses of two notorious lords.

ah-NOR-ee-ah
Revisado: 06-05-23
Earned a respectable B+ from me.
Besides inwardly flinching each time the narrator called her
“on-o-REE-ah” 🫤
…and despite my brain’s default method of trying to “make it make sense,” by substituting the error with an ACTUAL word (which unfortunately turned out to be words like seborrhea, diarrhea, or the perfectly-rhyming gonorrhea)🤦♀️
BESIDES all that, I actually really liked this one! 👍
I’ve passed up this title many times in favor of other books. Now that I finally took a chance on it, I am happy to discover it didn’t totally suck. 😆
Incidentally and for posterity, here it is again:
☑️ Honoria
▪️ah-NOR-ee-ah
▪️female of “Honorius”
▪️kinda rhymes with “Victoria”
▪️”ah-NOR-ee-ah” like “vic-TOR-ee-ah”
▪️also kinda rhymes with “Dysphoria”
▪️ please just don’t rhyme it with gonorrhea

Handsome, dashing Henry Wright, the Duke of Westerland, needed a wife in a desperately short period of time. If he could not find a wife, he would lose the legacy he so desperately desired. Young, lovely, but sheltered Miss Frederica Sayers needed a husband just as much as Henry Wright needed a wife, only she needed a husband to save her from the life of shame that almost certainly awaited her when shefled the callous cruelty of her family.

In this coming of age story, Dodie Smith introduces the visionary and eccentric character of seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain. The youngest daughter in a family of impoverished artists, it is her imagination and writing that takes us away from the ramshackle old English castle where they live, and towards an intriguing tale of husband-hunting and light-hearted sibling rivalry.

Beauty’s Evanescence — Perfectly Presented. Don’t miss this!
Revisado: 12-12-22
“He sounded faintly sad. Perhaps he finds beauty saddening — I do myself sometimes. Once when I was quite little I asked father why this was and he explained that it was due to our knowledge of beauty's evanescence, which reminds us that we ourselves shall die. Then he said I was probably too young to understand him; but I understood perfectly.”
I read this book years ago, and really enjoyed it. The audio performance, however, was all the more wonderful!! It makes me achingly sad to finish a book this beautiful, and the quote above, about “beauty’s evanescence”, explains the reasons well.
The narrator does an excellent job, and all I can say is DON’T MISS THIS ONE!

Historia
In any given glittering social season, Edwardian London's dizzying whirl had its share of surprises. The latest was Kitty Harrison, once achingly poor, suddenly an heiress and now, thanks to her determined mother, she was about to become a baroness. From the moment Kitty set eyes on Lord Chesworth she found him to be the most exciting man she had ever seen. But Kitty was young, innocent, and easily dazzled. She did not even question the motives of the dashing bachelor who swore he loved her even as he courted the scandalously beautiful Mrs. Jackson.

I was surprised to be this disappointed
Revisado: 09-18-22
I never listen to the naysayers on reviews of Beaton/Chesney books, because even the most silly are so much fun. Imagine my surprise, then, when I come across one of her books with NO bad reviews, and discover it to be quite disappointing. I wouldn’t say it is terrible, but it’s far below her others. Furthermore, I would rather have Charlotte Ann Dore instead of this narrator. Just… meh.
