Historia
A Manual for Cleaning Women compiles the best work of the legendary short-story writer Lucia Berlin. With the grit of Raymond Carver, the humor of Grace Paley, and a blend of wit and melancholy all her own, Berlin crafts miracles from the everyday, uncovering moments of grace in the laundromats and halfway houses of the American Southwest, in the homes of the Bay Area upper class, among switchboard operators and struggling mothers, hitchhikers, and bad Christians.

One of the best short story collections ever
Revisado: 01-23-20
What an enjoyable read. The straightforward but richly descriptive language, the narrative frankness, the truth blending with the imagined, the overwhelming sense of time and place. I feel as though I want to buy multiple copies of this book and give it to friends as gifts. It should be read and its author should be celebrated.

Historia
The exquisitely crafted stories in Anthony Doerr's acclaimed debut collection take listeners from the African coast to the pine forests of Montana to the damp moors of Lapland, charting a vast physical and emotional landscape. Doerr explores the human condition in all its varieties - metamorphosis, grief, fractured relationships, and slowly mending hearts - and conjures nature in both its beautiful abundance and crushing power.

where is the talent in all the light we cannot see
Revisado: 10-16-19
this doesn't feel like it was written by the same author who wrote all the light we cannot see. I actually took audible up on the option of trading the book in for another good read. This one really bored me. The character development is as as in all the light we cannot see, but the characters, quite frankly are folks who I have no desire of knowing the inner workings for.

Historia
Does nature really make us feel better? The 3-Day Effect takes a look at the science behind why being in the wild can make us happier, healthier, and more creative. Whether it’s rafting down Utah’s Green River, hiking in Utah’s wilderness, or walking through Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC, scientists are finding that the more exposure humans have to nature, the more we can benefit from reduced anxiety, enhanced creativity, and overall well-being.

get outside... Science proves it's good for you
Revisado: 10-12-19
Good audible production and a nice overview of current science on the effect of nature on our brains and overall well-being. The information is shared in narrative fashion with case studies interwoven that the speaker herself engages in.

A Fun Romp for a Sunday Afternoon
Revisado: 10-07-19
I'm not always appreciative of the two free Audible books that we get every month. This time, this book was an exception. and, it was exceptional. I had the book play while I cleaned house on a Sunday afternoon. It made me laugh, kept me entertained, and the performance was outstanding. It was just the right length for me to get all the housework done, too. I will be looking for other books being read by the Baldwin brothers. What mastery in presentation.

Historia
Author David Brooks explores the four commitments that define a life of meaning and purpose: to a spouse and family, to a vocation, to a philosophy or faith, and to a community. Our personal fulfillment depends on how well we choose and execute these commitments. Brooks looks at a range of people who have lived joyous, committed lives, and who have embraced the necessity and beauty of dependence. He gathers their wisdom on how to choose a partner, how to pick a vocation, how to live out a philosophy, and how we can begin to integrate our commitments into one overriding purpose.

Relationship . . . and pathos
Revisado: 10-04-19
David Brooks has taken what is overall a thought-provoking idea about living life beyond self and ruined it through a too in-depth meditation on his marriage and faith practice. I appreciate that the loss of his own first marriage was what stirred him to strive for something beyond self and that loss also brought him closer to his God, but the multiple chapters reflecting on relationship specifically through his marriage and his faith did not belong in this book. Read the first third of the book and the last third of the book for some thought-provoking essays on relationship and community in modern times. Skip the middle lest you too be pulled into his pathos.

Historia
From two leading child and adolescent mental health experts comes a guide for the parents of every college and college-bound student who want to know what’s normal mental health and behavior, what’s not, and how to intervene before it’s too late. All parenting is in preparation for letting go. However, the paradox of parenting is that the more we learn about late adolescent development and risk, the more frightened we become for our children, and the more we want to stay involved in their lives.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.
