Historia
Based on a groundbreaking in-depth survey of 22,000 Christian women, The Great Sex Rescue unlocks the secrets to what makes some marriages red hot while others fizzle out. Generations of women have grown up with messages about sex that make them feel dirty, used, or invisible, while men have been sold such a cheapened version of sex, they don't know what they're missing. The Great Sex Rescue hopes to turn all of that around, developing a truly biblical view of sex where mutuality, intimacy, and passion reign.

Historia
As a psychotherapist and professor of marriage and family therapy and sexuality at a Christian University, Tina Schermer Sellers, PhD, has spent a career listening deeply to the often untold, most tightly held, shame-filled stories of people’s lives. Over the last 30 years in particular, these stories have revealed the devastating effects of abstinence education, the purity movement of the evangelical church, and the simultaneous removal of media regulations that allowed for an influx of sexual violence against women to enter all forms of commercial media beginning in the 1980s.

Necessary reading
Revisado: 09-09-23
The beginning lays a foundation for why this book is needed. Then they talk about church history which was interesting (yet boring for me) than the 1990s (which was sociologically interesting for me). The middle of the book would help serve parents well with how to talk to their kids about healthy sexuality. The last portion of the book is written to therapists on how to help couples with their sex lives and my thought has been to tell clients to read it, make notes, and then practice.
This book is a shining light for the Christian trying to experience healthy sexuality and how to teach their children how to develop a healthy sexuality.

Historia
John T. Cacioppo's groundbreaking research topples one of the pillars of modern medicine and psychology: the focus on the individual as the unit of inquiry. By employing brain scans, monitoring blood pressure, and analyzing immune function, he demonstrates the overpowering influence of social context - a factor so strong that it can alter DNA replication.

Insightful
Revisado: 11-30-19
The book had some interesting knowledge and reports on studies regarding loneliness. There wasn’t much “here’s how to overcome loneliness” other than comprehending what they were reporting in the research and utilizing the findings to make changes. It was a little odd in that they described qualities that help fight against loneliness (such as warmth and empathy) and then stayed coldly scientific. A book on loneliness is not going to help combat loneliness but it seemed a little odd they only include anecdotes of loneliness without including anecdotes of comfort and belonging. The book spent what seemed like a long time/portion talking about evolution and different studies regarding animals. Some of it was helpful. However it felt a little redundant. Near the end they speak about social media and this is where they book shows its age. They spoke about people interacting through the media though they noted it would likely not be as beneficial as in person. There have been many studies to come out since publication noting social media’s negative effects on loneliness and this wasn’t touched on at all.

Highly insightful information and application
Revisado: 09-01-19
This isn’t exactly what I expected, it was much better. I’ve read many books on relationships and many come close to describing mine with certain aspects but one of the chapters was hitting the nail exactly on the head. So at the same time it was greatly appreciated while also stepping on my toes, challenging me to work on myself. The book leaves some of the growth discussion to the workbook and given the length of the book that is fine. I am awaiting the arrival of the work book and physical copy of the book to have as a guide.

The message of Created for Connection is simple: Forget about learning how to argue better, analyzing your early childhood, or making grand romantic gestures. Instead, get to the emotional underpinnings of your relationship by recognizing that you are attached to and dependent on your partner in much the same way that a child is on a parent and we are on the Heavenly Father for nurturing, soothing, and protection.

Great book, adjusted to the narrator over time
Revisado: 08-07-19
The book is really insightful and I appreciate Kenneth’s work with Sue to have a Christian viewpoint. EFT is going to continue to be very helpful to couples struggling with communication.
When I first started listening I was disappointed in the narrator. I had to turn the volume up rather loudly and anticipated that I would still miss part of what she was saying. However I found that I adjusted to her narration so that by the end I didn’t struggle with hearing her.

Revisado: 08-07-19
I came to greatly appreciate the wisdom of many of Corrie’s family and her own humility and struggles. The ten Boom family had a deep and abiding faith that touched my heart and encourages me to have deeper faith.
I expected to not like the book once things take a turn for the worse and yet it is written in a way, and perhaps the details unfolded in a way, that allowed me to hear what happened without my stomach churning with emotional upset.

Helpful steps and processes
Revisado: 05-08-18
This books has really good and helpful steps for working on one’s marriage and relationships. I would probably like the physical copy better so I can better see the steps and also there are many lists with Likert scales that the narrator reads after every question which was annoying for the audio version.
