May is a helluva writer. And Forbes is an excellent narrator. There are some real lessons to be learned from this novel.

I like books where the characters act reasonably - where their actions make sense. I found the ending of this book to be contrived with the characters thinking and acting irrationally, only in a way for the author to reach he desired conclusion. Just didn't do it for me.

I have read every Jack Taylor novel. I was happy to see that Bruen decided to resurrect the character, as I have enjoyed most of the novels. Galway, which I have visited once for only a short time, is a big character in most of the novels. Jack's love of reading is usually highlighted, though his lack of reading here was explained. I missed the normal discussion of books and authors. Bruen always says something about current events, and he really went to town in this one with the pandemic, the lockdown, Brexit, Johnson's resignation, the queen dying; funny he never mentioned Liz Truss' amazingly short tenure. This book seemed to have been rushed. I didn't think much of the plot, the development or the resolution really. It's not up to Bruen's standards IMHO. And I didn't like the narrator either. Prior narrators had been much better, I thought.

David Mitchell a tremendous job infusing his intelligence and unabashed sense of humor into a quick, fun, listenable history of early English monarchs through the Tudors. I highly recommend the audiobook version to hear Mitchell’s sometimes sarcastic delivery. Yes, the books trods over well worn ground, but the humor and the allusions to current events really liven things up. David, if you read this, please follow this up with another volume of history and musings. It was a real treat….

I have read all of McKinty’s Duffy novels now. This is a fitting end to the saga. Doyle is a tremendous narrator. He has a great feel for character voices. I really enjoy McKinty’s knowledge of Irish history and his cultural references, particularly with music. I was in my 20s in the 80s and 30s in the 90s, so this is in my wheelhouse. I never knew the details of the Irish Troubles that McKinty documents so well in these novels. His novels are a great mixture of suspense, history and police procedural. Highly recommend reading the whole saga in order.

Another fun adventure from Sebastien de Castell

I have probably listened to 4 or 5 de Castell books - all the Greatcoats series and this one. I didn't find this one quite as good as the Greatcoats books, but one thing that is consistent is Joe Jameson's narration. He just seems to have a great knack for the right voices for the different characters. He brings a lot of energy to his role. I think he is excellent. As for the book, since this was the first in what I assume will be a series, the reader/listener are being introduced to a number of new concepts and information that is unfamiliar. I didn't think that de Castell gave us enough information about the different magical castes or what their capabilities are or their relationships to one another to keep it all straight. A little more explanation and exposition would have made it better, I think. Still, it was fun. There was an interesting twist at the end though....

The protagonist is a grizzled veteran of the spy game called back into service to investigate the possibility of a Russian mole at the highest levels of British government. There are quite a few twists and turns the harrowing conclusion. I look forward to more of Richardson's books. The narration was a bit slow, so I just sped it up, but the story was engrossing!

But the real genius of the story is the relationship between Lenox and his father. I think we can all relate to it, whether in grieving the loss of such a strong and nurturing relationship or regretting that we did not have such a relationship with our own father. The Lenox stories are great as mysteries, but every so often Finch reveals deeper truths about the human condition.

Author Kerr does a fine job of capturing the atmosphere of pre-WWII Germany. Bernie Gunther, though idealistic in some respects, demonstrates the ambivalence of the German people toward Nazism, with all of its state-sponsored cruelty and disregard for human life. I enjoyed bumping into several of the famous Nazi thugs. Such an interesting but sad time in human history.

Interesting story about a historical figure

I liked the story on the whole but found the dialogue between characters stilted and unnatural, particularly for a historical figure who is known to be illiterate. The narrator was OK, but the lines he was forced to read often didn't ring true. Some of the phrases were re-used several times to the point of distraction. I would call this an average historical fiction novel.
