Given a rifle and sent to join the fight, Mila must forge herself from studious girl to deadly sniper—a lethal hunter of Nazis known as Lady Death. When news of her three hundredth kill makes her a national heroine, Mila finds herself torn from the bloody battlefields of the eastern front and sent to America on a goodwill tour.

Chick lit about a hot sniper girl
Revisado: 09-17-23
Spoiler alert. What a missed opportunity. The story is based on a WW2 female Russian sniper. The plot was interesting enough for me to endure hours of blathering about the hot sniper girl with a battalion of hot guy soldiers who would gladly die for her (or get in her pants). An evil (also hot) ex-husband who is a brilliant surgeon and wants to get in her pants. A hot fellow sniper, who wants to get in her pants, but waits till the sniper's hot love interest is killed. Our heroine (also hot) only wants to kill Nazis and talk in a weird fakey Russian accent (but oddly think in an American one). I give the narrator credit, she tried her best but did not stand a chance.I could go on about all the hotness you can find in this one audio, but I will stop.

Historia
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Historia
In April 1944, Rudolf Vrba became one of the very first Jews to escape from Auschwitz and make his way to freedom—among only a tiny handful who ever pulled off that near-impossible feat. He did it to reveal the truth of the death camp to the world—and to warn the last Jews of Europe what fate awaited them. Against all odds, Vrba and his fellow escapee, Fred Wetzler, climbed mountains, crossed rivers, and narrowly missed German bullets until they had smuggled out the first full account of Auschwitz the world had ever seen.

A tribute to a largely unknown hero.
Revisado: 12-09-22
This is a detailed, carefully researched, comprehensive, and graphic account of the machinery of the Naxi killing machine in Auschwitz, It tells of the escape of one Jewish man from and camp who tries to alert the world believing that knowledge is power and that this knowledge would stem the flow of the planned extermination of the Jewish people by the Nazis. It examines the psychology of denial among the European Jewish community, and the influence of antisemitism in Europe and the US. It outlines the massive failure to halt the slaughter and the successful saving of 200,00 Hungarian Jews because of this person's efforts. It explores the aftermath of post-war Europe and the US and the effects of trauma on this one escapee and his family.
What it is not is a tale of derring-do which the title suggests. It is a comprehensive historical witnessing, the cataloging of little-known facts, and a tribute to a largely unknown hero.

Historia
Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

Beautiful writing, reminiscent of Virginia Wolf the way she brings into life vivid reality with the most simple language. Well worth the listen, I intend to listen again, just to savor the writing.
And to the reviewer who did not make it past the intro - why don't you try the book, you might be surprised.

Historia
A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

Fascinating story, miserable narrator
Revisado: 10-09-22
I am plowing ahead because I want to see what happens next, in spite of a narrator who seems to be clueless about what she is reading and whose annunciation would be appropriate for a preschool class. Way to ruin a good book Audible

Grueling topic- she handles it well
Revisado: 06-09-22
If you like Lisa Jewell's writing this is well worth the read - if you can handle the topic. There is no sense of voyeurism when she deals with the impossibly difficult passages but does not minimize them either. As always she paints a very compelling portrait of her characters that bring you into their world. There is satisfying completeness to the arc of the tale, and an affirmation of the uplifting and good qualities of the characters.

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

Many, many, many words
Revisado: 06-04-22
There was much to like, a good tale with interesting characters and vivid language. But so very long. A good editor would have slashed the thing in two. I struggled to the end, but I am not really sure that it was worth it. Can't beat Juliet Stevenson though, she can rescue the most plodding prose.

A nostalgic tale of pre-war England.
Revisado: 02-23-22
Beautifully read, a story for people who want to get lost in a portrayal of life among the wealthy in pre-second wold war England. The plot is somewhat predictable and falls apart at the end, there are probably more characters then was wise, but a pleasant nostalgic journey into a past world.
