Historia
Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the grandest epics in the annals of imaginative literature. Now Herbert's son, Brian, working with Kevin J. Anderson and using Frank Herbert's own notes, reveals a pivotal epoch in the history of the Dune universe: the Butlerian Jihad, the war that was fought ten thousand years before the events of Dune - the war in which humans wrested their freedom from "thinking machines."

Had to Return for Refund
Revisado: 06-03-23
I finished the prequel house books of Dune that were written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson. I thoroughly enjoyed them and had hoped the Butlerian Jihad would add the same level of rich back story as the other books. I've been trying to get past Chapter 2 for the past 3 weeks and had to finally admit defeat. It's possible it gets better later in the book. However, I tend to be fairly optimistic when it comes to audiobooks (especially if they relate to a series I enjoy). There wasn't a single character or portion of storyline that I could grasp on to remember, let alone carry me through the beginning. I finally returned it, which is a rare occurrence for me.
I highly recommend the aforementioned house books as they provide a lot of insight into events and families that existed before the original book's story.

It's refreshing to have a different take on the standard characters and their motives. The story was well-written, and the voice actors were fantastic!

It took me a while to get into the story with characters seeming cliche, but they grew on me and became more dynamic as the story developed. It's rare for a story's ending to be a mystery to me, so it's refreshing and unexpected when I can't predict the reveal. I find myself wanting more now that it's over and hope there will several more.

Historia
As a child Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating - and waiting for suitable prey.

Good story, bad narration
Revisado: 05-19-22
I enjoyed the story in general and love hearing more about Ripley and Jonesy. The callbacks to Alien weave this additional story into the franchise nicely. The new characters are interesting and fairly well-developed considering the length of the book.
The one downside was the narrator. He consistently adds an upward lilt to a single word, most often at the end of a sentence. It detracts from the drama, especially during climactic scenes. It's very strange. Here's an example: A shrill scream echoed in the DISTANCE. Each member of the party paused, listening keenly for movement behind THEM. Ahead of Ripley, someone stumbled and cursed under their BREATH.
The only comparison I can make is from the 90s comedy show The Kids in the Hall. There's an ongoing skit with an annoying little boy that tells tall tales to everyone he sees. Each thought ends with an upward inflection, presumably with the intent of hooking the listener so they'll want to know more.

“Shy” Hunt and the tech team from McAllen Integrations thought they’d have an easy job - set up environmental systems for the brand new Hasanova Data Solutions colony, built on the abandoned ruins of a complex known as “Charybdis”. There are just two problems: The colony belongs to the Iranian state, so diplomacy is strained at best, and the complex is located above a series of hidden caves that contain deadly secrets.

I'm 7 chapters in, and the author is still setting-up the political landscape. It's rare for me to not finish a book, but I'm asking for a refund on this one.

Ataegina was an isolated world of medieval castles, varied cultures, and conquests, vibrant until the demons rose and spread relentless destruction. Swarms of lethal creatures with black husks, murderous claws, barbed tails, and dreaded “tooth-tongues” raged through the lowlands, killing 90 percent of the planet’s population. Terrified survivors fled to hidden mountain keeps where they eke out a meager existence. When a trio of young warriors discovers a new weapon, they see a chance to end this curse. To save humanity, they must fight.

Read the book - avoid the narrator
Revisado: 08-08-21
The story was great - good character development and told from a novel Bronze Age perspective.. I liked everything except the performance. One of the main characters (and a couple of smaller roles) is voiced in what I can only describe as a 1980's era Valley Girl voice. It's so ridiculous and annoying that it detracts from the story. I'll never listen to this again but would consider reading it in the future.

Still good, but I wanted to like it more
Revisado: 07-13-21
As always, James Marsters *becomes* Harry during the voicing of this book. I found most of the story very interesting, especially the scenes where JB pulls back the curtain on certain aspects of Fae that had merely been hinted at in previous books. Those drew me in, but I didn't LOVE the book. That really surprised me since everything is coming to a head in these last [sob] few books, and the previous get a five-star rating from me.
It's difficult to put my finger on exactly what didn't land right IMO, but I'll give it a go. There are two things that immediately spring to mind - one is a specific scene, and the other is an overarching plot line. JB typically drops knowledge bombs in a way that feels like stumbling upon unexpected treasure. When info about the Star Born was revealed, I kept thinking "... and....?" Previous books made being Star Born seem like a mystical event that pretty much everyone on the Weird side of things acknowledged as being of great import, and everyone conspired to keep Harry in the dark about it. When it was finally revealed, It just seemed a far less juicy bit of knowledge than the build-up foreshadowed.
The overarching plot that fell flat for me was Thomas' predicament throughout the majority of the book. I've been hugely fond of him since we learned he was Margaret's son. This time around, I found it difficult to care what happened to him.

One of my favorite books in WoT series
Revisado: 10-04-20
I think this book is one of the most exciting. Previous books have developed characters so we know them very well; here we learn what everyone's been doing since we left them in the last book, headed off their separate ways. Since the backstory and groundwork have been laid in the earlier books, the storyline moves along at a quick pace. Aside from all the battles, several mysteries begin to unravel. We learn more about Tel'aran'rhiod and certain Forsaken, which I find of special interest.

Most enjoyable book in a long time
Revisado: 01-13-19
After listening to a couple of X-Files books read by Gillian Anderson, I decided to give this a try. It wasn't until I was partway through the book and wondering who had written such an engaging story that I realized she was also one of the authors. What a pleasant surprise! I really liked the characters, which are well-developed without side-tracking the storyline. I'll be looking for more books written by her.

Join the world's most famous drow elf in the penultimate chapter of the Legend of Drizzt series! Spending time in the unimaginable torture chambers of the Abyss for even a day would be enough to break even the heartiest soul, and the barbarian Wulfgar was there for years. When he returns, his friends find him a changed man, and not changed for the better. But Wulfgar's road to redemption is one he must travel on his own, even if it leads to the bottle.

Worst book in all Drizzt-related series
Revisado: 09-16-18
This is the first time in my years of listening to audio books that I skipped entire chapters. I'm not a fan of Wulfgar and don't feel he brings much to the storyline, so an entire book about him was too much for me. I also think the writing in this book was beneath what I've Co e to expect from other Salvatore books. I managed to struggle through to the end in the hope that the rest of the crew would have larger parts (I don't want to miss any key plot points for later books), but I feel as though I wasted my time.
