Historia
Thirteen young men live in a house in Sheffield, each in flight from India and in desperate search of a new life. Tarlochan, a former rickshaw driver, will say nothing about his past in Bihar, and Avtar has a secret that binds him to protect the choatic Randeep. Randeep, in turn, has a visa wife in a flat on the other side of town: a clever, devout woman whose cupboards are full of her husband's clothes, in case the immigration men surprise her with a call.

A must read
Revisado: 05-21-16
I liked this book. It informed me of the desperate measures people looking for a better life face when fleeing their own corrupt overcrowded homelands.
This book builds empathy in the reader for people in this situation. It also subtly throws the myth of spiritual India into the spotlight leaving the reader questioning the role of religion.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

A wondrous heartfelt and fascinating story
Revisado: 04-17-15
This novel was a surprise. I listened to it twice without stopping. New York as the backdrop to a magical yet everyday tale woven with expert measures of adventure, intrigue and emotion.
I can't wait for her next novel. Will it be a sequel? Recommended.

Historia
Ephram Jennings has never forgotten the beautiful girl with the long braids running through the piney woods of Liberty, their small East Texas town. Young Ruby, “the kind of pretty it hurt to look at,” has suffered beyond imagining, so as soon as she can, she flees suffocating Liberty for the bright pull of 1950s New York. Ruby quickly winds her way into the ripe center of the city - the darkened piano bars and hidden alleyways of the Village - all the while hoping for a glimpse of the red hair and green eyes of her mother.

Sad , shocking and deeply moving
Revisado: 03-01-15
This was a sad shocking and gripping novel exceptionally well read by the author. Some of the images are very graphic and perhaps there should be some mention of this. I went for a five k run after one of the passages as it was so traumatic.
Having said that it gives a deep insight into mental illness and the pervasive evils that flourish in western society.
Recommended but be warned graphic scenes.

Historia
May We Be Forgiven, a darkly comic novel of 21st-century domestic life, stars Harold Silver, a historian who's always been jealous of his successful brother, George. But when the hot-tempered George is institutionalized for committing a violent act, Harold finds himself comforting his brother's wife and children. What follows is a scathing examination of a family so fractured it may never be whole again.

Riveting. Clever. Wry humour and such darkness. I love the constant interruptions that take the lead from one drama to the next. Well worth the listen.
