Historia
The Cleverley family live a gilded life, little realising how precarious their privilege is, just one tweet away from disaster. George, the patriarch, is a stalwart of television interviewing, a 'national treasure' (his words); his wife, Beverley, a celebrated novelist; and their children, Nelson, Elizabeth, Achilles, various degrees of catastrophe waiting to happen. Together they will go on a journey of discovery through the Hogarthian jungle of the modern living where past presumptions count for nothing and carefully curated reputations can be destroyed in an instant.

Historia
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

Stream of consciousness
Revisado: 07-07-24
Interesting concept and important POV - we don’t get a lot of stories told from the perspective of middle aged women who are close menopause. A woman’s worth seems to be (on a societal level at least) directly tied to her youth and fertility… but there’s a. WHOLE LOT of life left (about 40 years if all goes well) to live after your fertility window closes - what do we do with ourselves in those years? The story was told in a stream of consciousness style - disjointed and unique - it was enjoyable. A bit pretentious and self important.. also the narrator / protagonist was pretty unlike able (cheating on her husband with zero remorse and prioritizing her own fantasies and crushes over her husband and child) but I appreciated the fact that the author gave a voice to women of a certain age.

Historia
As the child of a Hooters waitress and an ex-pro wrestler, Margo Millet's always known she’d have to make it on her own. So she enrolls at her local junior college, even though she can’t imagine how she’ll ever make a living. She’s still figuring things out and never planned to have an affair with her English professor—and while the affair is brief, it isn’t brief enough to keep her from getting pregnant. Despite everyone’s advice, she decides to keep the baby, mostly out of naiveté and a yearning for something bigger.

Historia
It's 1990 in London and Tom Hargreaves has it all: a burgeoning career as a reporter, fierce ambition and a brisk disregard for the "peasants"—ordinary people, his readers, easy tabloid fodder. His star seems set to rise when he stumbles across a sensational scoop: a dead child on a London estate, grieving parents beloved across the neighborhood, and the finger of suspicion pointing at one reclusive family of Irish immigrants and “bad apples”: the Greens. At their heart sits Carmel: beautiful, otherworldly, broken, and once destined for a future beyond her circumstances.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Great reimagining of a Dickens classic!
Revisado: 01-11-24
This is basically David Copperfield set in the 90’s/2000’s in the Appalachias. It was a very clever and creative way to tell a classic story of poverty / addiction / and societal inequality and corruption. Copperfield is a street peasant/ orphan in England in the 1800s while Copperhead is a foster kid with drug addicted parents during the opioid crisis in the poorest part of rural West Virginia. It was very well written and the narrator did a great job too

Historia
It used to be: Make good grades, get good SAT scores, write a good essay, and you were on your way to a good college. Now? Kiss that world goodbye. Merit isn’t a sure thing. Connections are everything. And money talks– a lot. Enter Kelly Pritzker (Abbi Jacobson), a shrewd, New Jersey-based college “consultant” who isn’t above faking athletic profiles, seducing administrators, greasing palms, and juicing GPAs. When it comes to getting the under-qualified and uber-privileged into the Ivy League, Kelly’s the closest thing you’ll find to a guarantee...If you can afford her, that is.

So Good
Revisado: 10-24-23
I lost my father back in January. This is SO GOOD for people dealing with loss and grief. A genuinely funny and perceptive insight into the way we process and deal with death. Literally everyone who’s ever existed (and everyone who currently exists) will die. It’s the only thing every single human has in common with every other human. It’s the ultimate “shared reality”. And even though loss and death are painful and difficult and awful - it connects human beings because we will all experience loss at some point and we will all, eventually, die ourselves. Brilliant. Wish I could give MORE than 5 stars
