Historia
When Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017―rendering the ancient poem in contemporary language that was “fresh, unpretentious and lean” (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)―critics lauded it as “a revelation” (Susan Chira, New York Times) and “a cultural landmark” (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an equally revelatory translation of Homer’s other great epic―the most revered war poem of all time.

Wrong Voice
Revisado: 12-17-24
Audra MacDonald is a great actress, but the Iliad is a very male story, She is not convincing as the voices of the macho men who slaughter each other and use women as merchandise . Her reading of Dr Wilson’s introduction is excellent.

Historia
The works of Thomas Wolfe cemented his legacy as one of the very best of the American Southern writers. Wolfe's largely autobiographical novel features Eugene Gant, who pines for a more expansive life after being born to a father whose bouts of maniacal raving are fueled by a prodigious appetite for drink.

Revisado: 09-28-24
This is the most embarrassingly overwritten, puerile, and racist, misogynistic, and antisemitic novel I have ever read or listened to. I would ban it being in any high school or college reading list. I finished it merely to see whether TW ultimately realized the hatefulness of his writing. Oh lost!

Of course the main genes worthy of editing in human embryonic stem cell lines would be those of Jennifer Doudna: honesty, intellect, curiosity, hard work, kindness and good judgement. Inject me now!

Historia
First published in monthly parts from March 1852 to September 1853, this novel follows the fortunes of three pedestrian characters; Esther Summerson, Ada Clare, and Richard Carstone. The story they tell embondies Dickens' merciless indictment of the Court of Chancery and its bungling, morally corrupt handling of the endless case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, giving the novel its scope and meaning.

This used to be my favorite Dickens novel. Listening to it again, I find it impossibly sentimental, soppy and melodramatic. As Trollope commented, Dickens characters are unreal. Simon Vance reads this superbly. My only criticism is that Esther’s voice is too male. This was Dickens only female main narrator.

Historia
As President Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves. The result is one of the few White House memoirs to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the president, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a president for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation.

That just about sums up this book which reads like an unedited diary of Bolton’s daily schedule. It is so full of self congratulation and patting himself on the back that it is nauseating to read.

Historia
Donald Trump's campaign chairman went to jail. So did his personal lawyer. His long-time political consigliere was convicted of serious federal crimes, and his national security advisor pled guilty to others. Career intelligence agents and military officers were alarmed enough by the president's actions that they alerted senior government officials and ignited the impeachment process. Yet despite all this, a years-long inquiry led by special counsel Robert Mueller, and the third impeachment of a president in American history, Donald Trump survived to run for re-election. Why?

Best of many!
Revisado: 08-08-20
I have read all the books covering Trump and this period in history. This book is scholarly and thorough and exceptionally clear. There is a lot of new personal color that came from interviews with many of the main players and lots of inside information on the Mueller inquiry as well as the impeachment. For the majority of the book, I thought the account was straight reporting without bias. Toward the denouement, the author’s bias becomes more apparent. Since I totally share his bias, I thought the book was a terrific recounting of recent history, well researched, and highly readable.

Any additional comments?
David McCullough manages to weave the biographies of a dozen 19th century American painters, writers, physicians and diplomats into an engaging and totally pleasurable experience. The only disappointment was that it ended; the only shortcoming was that it lacked photographs and pictures.

Historia
This New York Times best seller is a thrilling account of one of the most pivotal moments in United States history. Six months after the Declaration of Independence, America was nearly defeated. Then on Christmas night, George Washington led his men across the Delaware River to destroy the Hessians at Trenton. A week later Americans held off a counterattack, and in a brilliant tactical move, Washington crept behind the British army to win another victory. The momentum had reversed.
