Contrived writing and very inconsistent characterizations.
Revisado: 10-26-24
The amount of deus ex machina was infuriating. Zero stakes. The tone of characters seemed to switch on a dime and not give any real depth to them. I really wanted to like this book... I'm disappointed.

This started in a very interesting sci-fi place and ended with me in tears over the erasure of a human beings existence. Short and beautiful.

Historia
Heather McGhee’s specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all.

Great book for people interested to really learn
Revisado: 04-27-21
I feel like oftentimes people of color aren't listened to when we talk about our negative experiences because white folks aren't aware of how it impacts them as well. This book sheds enormous light on that fact and dispels the zero sum rhetoric that is used so often to justify everything from workplace discrimination, union busting, home ownership, and police violence.
This book is recommended to any person that wants to examine their own biases and understand what racism truly does.
Heather McGhee's cadence is easy to follow and a great listening experience overall.
