learning is the experience of this book. Reading Walden by Thoreau again last year brought the Thoreau references close to my heart (also 'Henry Working').

Historia
As Indigenous scientist and author of Braiding Sweetgrass Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most? Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry’s relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity.

a single berry
Revisado: 11-20-24
what I sense is that moment and place where you encounter and thereby experience the berry and the berry plant. you are feeling like being a part of nature.
it's important that the author frames this in our current time, when in 50 years, the earth will no longer be habitable for homo sapiens.

Historia
Fascinated from an early age by the natural world in general and ants in particular, Edward Osborne Wilson's field work on them and on all social insects has vastly expanded our knowledge of their many species and fascinating ways of being. This work led to his 1975 book Sociobiology, which created an intellectual firestorm from his contention that all animal behavior, including that of humans, is governed by the laws of evolution and genetics. Subsequently, Wilson has become a leading voice on the crucial importance to all life of biodiversity.

yes we need this book
Revisado: 06-24-23
I was glued, listening almost straight through. imagine yes first life then an environment with an additional life form, then another, all adapting and developing. an ecosystem all connected. Half Earth = there's an answer, or one answer. Hard as it is to get a grip, make progress, take action, hard as that feels, here's a book that can strengthen us.

The Ministry for the Future is a masterpiece of the imagination, using fictional eyewitness accounts to tell the story of how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us - and in which we might just overcome the extraordinary challenges we face.

It is on us; governments. banks, companies are almost immobile in the glaring light of the tipping point which arrived.

Historia
Decades of research document plants' impressive abilities: they communicate with one another, manipulate other species, and move in sophisticated ways. Lesser known, however, is the new evidence that plants may actually be sentient. Although plants may not have brains, their microscopic commerce exposes a system not unlike the neuronal networks running through our own bodies. Paco Calvo offers an entirely new perspective on plant biology. In Planta Sapiens, he shows for the first time how we can use tools developed in animal cognition studies in a quest to deeply understand plant intelligence.

In Rooted, cutting-edge science supports a truth that poets, artists, mystics, and earth-based cultures across the world have proclaimed over millennia: Life on this planet is radically interconnected. Our bodies, thoughts, minds, and spirits are affected by the whole of nature, and they affect this whole in return. In this time of crisis, how can we best live upon our imperiled, beloved earth? Award-winning writer Lyanda Lynn Haupt’s highly personal new book is a brilliant invitation to live with the earth in both simple and profound ways.

and the narrator was so good. The last chapter is a hidden treasure, a road trip of Laura Ingalls Wilder's life that feels hard to resist. Gardening, wildflowers, fields, forests, rocks, streams fill the pages. They filled my heart, even today after almost 50 years of mainly vegetable gardening that expanded to pollinators.

such is intelligence, of the living world . This is a book much needed. I "grew up canoeing in to camp for 6 weeks on an Adirondack lake", over many summers. The light, freshness, "my world of plants and forests" are ever with me. Until I read this book I'd never known anything about the micro worlds that were there.

Historia
A study of the spiritual provocations to be found in the work of Philip K. Dick, Terence McKenna, and Robert Anton Wilson, High Weirdness charts the emergence of a new psychedelic spirituality that arose from the American counterculture of the 1970s. These three authors changed the way millions of readers thought, dreamed, and experienced reality - but how did their writings reflect, as well as shape, the seismic cultural shifts taking place in America?
