Historia
Downtown New York City in the 1970s and '80s is a dark and dangerous place for Janie Thompson. Her indifferent parents give her little guidance, and leave her older brother, the only person who truly loves her, no choice but to run away. Her working-class Queens neighborhood offers too many opportunities to fail, and several of her closest friends fall victim.

Terrific Read
Revisado: 06-30-22
Sonder is a well paced intricate story about the life of Janie, growing up in Queens NY in the 1970s with a typical working class family. From the outside everything looks normal, but like most families, home life is not what it appears. You quickly get wrapped into the day to day life of gritty NYC during a darker period in recent history. The book follows Janie as she navigates through childhood and adolescents to early adulthood as she struggles with the constant changes and challenges life throws at her. A roller-coaster of a read, I enjoyed every second of it. First time listening to Michele as a narrator and I was impressed, she performed character voices distinctively which added to the experience as a whole. I would highly recommend this book!

Historia
Very few people know that Mark Twain wrote a major work on Joan of Arc. Still fewer know that he considered it not only his most important, but also his best work. He spent 12 years in research and many months in France doing archival work, and then made several attempts until he felt he finally had the story he wanted to tell.

This text concisely puts forward the case for a form of nihilism - fusing thoughts from Hume, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche, amongst others. It forcefully argues that morality as we know it is a power structure disguised as knowledge; that law is based upon this false idol; and that thus power is, in fact, the basis of all life.

First listen through was fascinating. Definitely a repeat listen. Peter easily frames complex ideas for palatable self understanding.

Historia
Set in the Parisian underworld and plotted like a detective story, Les Miserables follows Jean Valjean, originally an honest peasant, who has been imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving family. A hardened criminal upon his release, he eventually reforms, becoming a successful industrialist and town mayor. Despite this, he is haunted by an impulsive former crime and is pursued relentlessly by the police inspector Javert.

The human element
Revisado: 07-13-21
Wholly original, relatable and relevant. If you enjoy Dostoevsky or Tolstoy, this is a must read; many aspects of this book are recycled in subsequent classics. Instantly joined my top three of all time, alongside "War and Peace" and "The Brothers Karamazov" the latter of which might be an acquired taste.
