Great story, needed more character development for Bess
Revisado: 10-24-24
I love the story, and it kept me guessing on a lot of things.
One thing that bothered me a bit was that the youngest daughter, Bess, was barely in the story and the author didn't give her really any character development. The other characters commented a lot about her quirks and how she was a bit weird because of her autism, and she didn't really have any personality beyond that. There was no storytelling from her perspective, like there was with every other member of the family.

Very inspiring and helpful!
Revisado: 10-08-24
My son is nonverbal (6 years old), And I know he is so smart. We looked into doing letter boarding with him maybe a year ago, but couldn't afford it, so we were trying to figure out other ways to help him communicate. Right now we're learning ASL with him, and he seems to have taken to that, but I have letterboarding on the back burner as an option if ASL doesn't fully pan out.
We saw the Spellers movie a while ago when it first came out, and I didn't realize that Jamie was in it at the time until listening to this book! I need to go back and watch it again after listening to this book, now knowing more of his backstory.

It keeps you on your toes!
Revisado: 08-15-21
There are so many secrets and so many ways things can go wrong… or right. The book keeps you guessing the entire time about which direction everything will go, and it keeps you engaged. I did find the ending kind of rushed though, and it left me wanting to know more. I hope there will be a sequel!
I did find the narrator a bit annoying for a while, but started to get used to it after the first 1/3 of the book or so. Just the way she pronounced words made it seem like she was trying to be overly dramatic, but it could’ve just been that she had an accent I wasn’t used to. She did do a good job with the different characters’ voices.

Great book!
Revisado: 07-04-20
This is one of my favorite Elin Hilderbrand books so far! The writing was especially good, and the plot was intriguing. It was occasionally a bit hard to follow because it jumps around from past to present, but the flashbacks definitely add to the story and the understanding of the characters. This book really keeps you guessing, and ends on a satisfying note. 9/10, would recommend.

Love it, but writing seems a bit simplistic
Revisado: 02-25-20
I loved the book and it kept me guessing the whole time. In the end, my theories were all wrong!
I did think the style of writing was a little simplistic, like the author would write a person’s name several times in the paragraph instead of “she” or “he,” and it just made it sound more amateurish. But I do look forward to reading more of her books. :)

Don’t like how it seems to condone infidelity
Revisado: 04-13-19
I liked the side of the story about Jamie and the trial, but I did not like the side about infidelity. It was so aggravating and I didn’t like how it almost seemed to condone cheating. That’s one of the few things in a relationship that i would not be able to forgive, so I just did not enjoy that part of the storyline at all.

So insightful
Revisado: 01-19-19
This book is very data-heavy, which can sometimes make it hard to follow, but it shows that the author really did his research. It is so insightful and helpful, though aggravating to think that we’ve come to this and that so many people are blindly following the vaccine program without doing any research of their own.
It definitely lit a fire in me to find something I can do to help stop this epidemic.

Great book, loved the narrator.
Revisado: 01-10-19
I was a little iffy about it being a male narrator at first because sometimes they don’t do the female voices very well, but this guy’s voice is awesome.
The book was really good too and kept me guessing. Several twists that are heart-wrenching or so relieving. I liked her writing in this book a lot too. Usually I think she uses entirely too many metaphors and doesn’t end the book well, but this is one of her better ones. I’d definitely recommend it.

My favorite Jodi Picoult book by far!
Revisado: 11-15-18
Even though she is my favorite author, I’ve realized that I don’t really like her writing style so much as the stories she tells. However, this book was so different from her normal writing style, and I loved it!
I love the character development and the way she talks about race in a way that helps people better understand without getting defensive. I don’t know that I agree with what she seemed to imply that all white people are either actively or passively racist because I think that’s a bit discriminatory towards white people and a bit demeaning. I do think that people who may not perceive themselves as racist still subtly act on biases, but I do not think that one is racist simply by being Caucasian.
I absolutely love what she did with the ending (for once. Usually I hate the endings of her books)! I really could not tell which way the trial was going to go and I really liked the way she took it.
It was also great to hear from the perspective of each different side - the black nurse, the white public defender, and even the white supremacist. It made the characters seem real and dynamic, and I loved it. Definitely recommend.
