Historia
In a far future, post-nuclear-holocaust Africa, genocide plagues one region. The aggressors, the Nuru, have decided to follow the Great Book and exterminate the Okeke. But when the only surviving member of a slain Okeke village is brutally raped, she manages to escape, wandering farther into the desert. She gives birth to a baby girl with hair and skin the color of sand and instinctively knows that her daughter is different.

And I thought Book of Phoenix’s narration was bad....
Revisado: 07-02-20
I love love LOVE Nnedi’s work. So it is heartbreaking that I don’t think i can finish listening to this one. I though the narrator of Book of Phoenix was bad, but that was before I listened to this one😩. It makes me uncomfortable listening to this extremely forced, horribly executed African accent. I felt like i was listening to a racist comedy sketch. And I have ADHD, so it’s damn near impossible for me to read books without the assistance of an audio version. I don’t think i can keep listening to this, and I’m sad 😢

Historia
Phoenix was grown and raised among other genetic experiments in New York's Tower 7. She is an "accelerated woman" - only two years old but with the body and mind of an adult, Phoenix's abilities far exceed those of a normal human. Still innocent and inexperienced in the ways of the world, she is content living in her room speed reading ebooks, running on her treadmill, and basking in the love of Saeed, another biologically altered human of Tower 7.

The narrators are killing me man😩

A big fan of Nnedi’s work! Enjoyed the story, but not as much as her Akata Witch series (loved the reference to the guardian angel from the Zuma wrestling story line). But maaannn, we need more African narrators. As an Igbo girl myself, I couldn’t help but cringe at the gross mispronunciation of literally every Igbo word. It really took away from the experience.
