Not Cussler's best.

I read Raise The Titanic back in the 80's. Loved it. It started a long appreciation of Cussler's work. The mix of indiana Jones type adventure with nautical mysteries is spot on.

Sadly, Cussler's first book, Pacific Vortex, and this book are not up to the quality of the rest of Cussler's books. Cussler seemed to be still learning his craft. He doesn't quite yet have a command of his main character.

Luckily, Cussler found his stride with book 3, Iceberg. When asked, I suggest people start with that book.

I should also say that I am not a fan of Scott Brick as a narrator. I usually try to avoid any book read by Brick.

This is the best audiobook I've ever heard. Excellent narrator who does all the voices. Amazing John Williams score. Extra details not in the film. Sound effects.

It's like listening to the movie, except what is presented here is better than the film we saw.

Highest Recommendation, and Big Thumbs Up!

Perfect Narrator For A Great Pulp Fiction Story

If you're in the mood for pulpy crime fiction with characters that will make you addicted to them and a narrator that is perfect for this material, you'll want to read Swag.

This book is often cited as one of Elmore Leonard's best tales. I can't say enough about the narrator. He does great voices, even women convincingly, and he recognizes the humor Leonard seeded throughout the narrative.

I give this book 5 stars in all categories, because it's a great, pulpy read, and the narrator is one of the rare ones that actually makes the book a better experience than reading the book the old fashioned way.

I wish they all could be this good.

Fantastic Book That Deserves A Better Narrator

I've tried twice to listen to this. I can't stand the narrator. But the epic saga of Elric by Moorecock is fantastic. I have it in paperback form. I'll just read it the old fashioned way.

Man, I wish they'd republish this audio book with a narrator up to bringing life to Moorecock's words. Samuel Roukin, on this audiobook, sounds like he's reading the news--clear and succinct, but dry and unengaging. Elric deserves a grand tale-spinner, not someone who is going to put you to sleep.

If anybody associated with publishing the book reads this, please REPUBLISH THIS BOOK WITH A BETTER NARRATOR!

Fantastic Book That Deserves A Better Narrator

This is one of the better biographies I've ever read, and it's quite funny in parts. You wouldn't know that, though, listening to this book because all of the humor is lost on the narrator. He just drives right through the prose as if he were reading a wet newspaper.

This book needs a narrator that "gets it". It needs a narrator with vocal charisma. It needs someone that makes you feel as if you've walked into the pilot's lounge, and you're sharing a beer with Boyington as he spins the tales of his life.

Take the narrator out of the equation, and you've got a damn fine book. I'd give the book, itself, 5 Stars. I took off one for the narrator.

If you can, read this book. Get a copy and read it the old school way, with your two eyes. You'll enjoy Boyington's tale of his life much better, I would guess.

The Verdict: This is a Top notch memoir tainted somewhat by a lackluster narrator.

This is a great book whether you read it or listen to the audiobook. This narrator, Anthony Heald, is flat-out perfect for this material.

This book will make you laugh. It will put a lump in your throat. It will make you yearn for your childhood, and it will make you go home and love on your dog!

If any part of you is attracted to the description of the story told in this book, stop hesitating. You'll be so glad you experienced it.

Highly recommended.

A Different Experience Than The Film

The book was written as the film was being made. Kubrick partnered with Clarke, with the idea that the book would help them sell the movie to one of the studio distributors. Kubrick and Clarke wrote the screenplay together, and as that was being written, Clarke wrote the novel.

I really enjoyed the book. I can see why it was a best seller.

But, the book is a totally different experience than the film. There are new scenes. There are longer scenes. The focus and emphasis in the scenes is sometimes different. There is A LOT more detail.

The movie can be awe-inspiring due to its mystery and what is not explained through the visuals on the screen. The book explains things very well yet still delivers awe-inspiring moments through the exploration and far-thinking that is revealed in the ideas of the book. Remember, this book was published in the late 1960's. It came out before man had landed on the moon. It is amazing to me how correct Clarke's thoughts were--how they've held up after all the decades since the book came out. In Clarke's excellent opening introduction to the book, he cites pre-moon-landing scientists that predicted landing on the moon would be impossible because large areas of the surface were composed of massive fields of fine dust. They speculated that a landing capsule would sink as if it were in quicksand.

If you are at all curious about the film, then read the book. I think reading the book then watching the movie is probably not a bad idea, either. You'd be going into the film seeing how some parts are dramatized and understanding the film much more easily.

I also think that the book is a good read outside of the film. If you read the book and never saw the film, you'd be satisfied through the one experience.

Narrator was OK.

Story is still pretty damned good. Very interesting.

Overall, I'd say read the book is you are hesitating but interested in 2001 A Space Odyssey. You won't be disappointed, and you won't feel like you've already read the book if you've seen the film.

This surprised me. I really liked it. Stories about playing poker in underground games. I bought the other two: The Darker Side of the Felt and The Burning Felt.

Poker players will dig this.

If someone had never listened to an audiobook before, and that person asked me what it was like, I would direct them to this book. This is a sterling example of material mated with the perfect narrator.

The book is about magic, poker, bluffing, slight of hand, con jobs, and card sharps. If that sounds interesting to you, then don't hesitate to add this one to your collection. It is one of the best audiobook experiences I've ever had.

When you get done, if you want another top notch experience like this, then I suggest you check out The Dawn Patrol by Don Winslow--another example of material mated to the perfect narrator for that work.

Five Stars for this one.
