One of the main elements of this series is the “virgin yin” of a main character. I don’t think we can get through half a chapter without discussing the value of her virgin yin.

But in the creepiest show. A man spends his virgin yan comes back and he is as strong as a virgin again. Where when a woman loses her virgin yin (and yes, loses is the most common term, though “give” is just as creepy), she is permanently less than she was before.

This is so gross.

Painfully boring

I am about halfway through. I enjoyed the first one. I love MotF.

This book is boring. I want to like it, it has all of the things I usually like. But it is so freaking boring that I keep getting distracted and losing track of where I am. Then trying to figure out what is going on is hard because the context is always changing.

There doesn’t feel like any stakes because it is al “dungeon instances”. The underlying story seems heavy handed. I don’t know why I would be remotely invested in the future of fallen reach.

Speculation: this also feels like it is going to go the way of the 100 “no one alive on earth, or who can possibly stay alive on earth, except for anytime we need a new character we will justify a whole civilization for them to come form with nonsense” except with a few preemptive whispers of “multiverse” to make it ok.

Losing the heart of the story

This used to be a story of Joseph helping to uplift Anyar with his knowledge from earth. But for the past couple of books the “uplift” elements of the story have stopped.

It is nothing but endless inteligence reports, lists of reasons why Jo’s friends may be moving between cities, how hard it is for Mara to exist, and “knowing looks between Karnigan and Wyfor Kales” (audiobook, spelling guess) about Jo doing something slightly odd…

At this point the decisions don’t even make sense, especially not from a political perspective.

I don’t the whole “nanobots help with memory” concept. But the idea of what knowledge Jo could have ever been exposed to has been stretched to so far beyond what a chemistry PhD student would have experienced, that it is getting incredulous.

I don’t think I’ll be able to finish this book, much less this series at this point, and that is devastating. But this just isn’t the series I started.

Weird self worship

There is nothing worse than the constant Marine worship. Much, MUCH worse when it is a Marine trying to show off weird bits of knowledge by self inserting himself as a marine into a brilliant holy warrior, made better by being a marine. I get that the genre is made of self inserts, but this is barely short of autoeroticism. Or at the very least an inappropriate sexual fascination with the idea of a marine, which the author was, which makes it worse.

While it has been criticized for getting stretched out for cash, I think the level of detail he goes into is incredible. There with mother of learning or spellmonger at this point. Incredible series with incredible scale. Keep it up!

I came here from Bastion, and wish I had been here earlier. Phil did a great job!

My only complaints were the meetings, why did we spend so much time on introductions?! Especially when SPOILERS: They die off ‘screen’?

Inhalations!

Book is great, continuation of the series. But I don’t know if the author changed her mic, or perhaps was recovering from a cold. But the authors quick little inhalations are often REALLY loud. It is hard to mentally filter out in places, especially in the first few chapters.
