Its LONG!
Revisado: 04-30-25
I didn't think I would ever finish this book. Not sure why some chapters were unnecessarily short and others too long. I guess because it jumped around a lot. Also, there were so many characters it was hard to keep them all straight. And some things were really hard to believe (like when Saint went by herself to Eli's house when she suspected what he was up to). The book was recommended to me by my daughter, but not sure I would recommend it to others.

Historia
1867, Richmond, Virginia: Though she wears the same low-cut purple gown that is the uniform of all the girls who work at Worsham's gambling parlor, Arabella stands apart. It's not merely her statuesque beauty and practiced charm. Even at seventeen, Arabella possesses an unyielding grit, and a resolve to escape her background of struggle and poverty. Collis Huntington, railroad baron and self-made multimillionaire, is drawn to Arabella from their first meeting. Collis is married and 30 years her senior, yet they are well-matched in temperament, and flirtation rapidly escalates into an affair.

Historia
During World War II, the Japanese forced 200,000 young Korean women to be sex slaves or "comfort women" for their soldiers. This is one woman’s riveting story of strength, courage, and promises kept. In 1943, the Japanese tear young Ja-hee and her sister from their peaceful family farm to be comfort women for the Imperial Army. Before they leave home, their mother gives them a magnificent antique comb with an ivory inlay of a two-headed dragon, saying it will protect them.

Something about the narration...
Revisado: 02-24-24
I was very interested to learn about this piece of history and loved that there was another book in the series but something about the narration was grating and I had to make myself finish this one. If the narrator is same on the other book I don't think I will be purchasing it.

Meryl Streep is a fantastic narrator
Revisado: 02-13-24
It took off a little slow for me due to the premise of the beginning but it didn’t take long for me to be hooked. The narration was superb but the reuse of so many familial and character names kept me confused at times. Loved the ending and continue to love everything by Ann Patchett.

Historia
From the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees, a magnificent novel about two unforgettable American women. Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world - and it is now the newest Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection. Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

Masterfully Written
Revisado: 07-19-23
This story was masterfully written and narrated and I fell in love with the characters. To find out at the end that it was based on real people was a bonus as I love historical fiction. Every time I had to put it down I couldn’t wait to get back to see what Sara and Handful were up to. What a legacy Sara and Nina left behind!

Historia
Fanny Burney's wickedly funny satire follows the trials and romantic adventures of the young and beautiful Evelina as she tries to make her way through 18th-century Britain handicapped by her three great problems: being poor, being illegitimate - and being a girl. Evelina was a raging best seller when it was first published in 1778 and is widely credited with being the first of the great British domestic novels. Burney was a direct influence on her immediate follower, Jane Austen.

Too many characters
Revisado: 02-01-23
The narration was good, but I found the story line tedious with way more characters than were necessary to advance Evelina's journey.

David Sedaris's beloved holiday collection is new again with six more pieces, including a never before published story. Along with such favorites as the diaries of a Macy's elf and the annals of two very competitive families, are Sedaris's tales of tardy trick-or-treaters ("Us and Them"); the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to the French ("Jesus Shaves"); and what to do when you've been locked out in a snowstorm ("Let It Snow").

Revisado: 02-01-23
I have loved every other Sedaris book I've read or listened to, but this one was a let down. Thought it would be a perfect fit to listen over the 2022 holidays, but I didn't find this one entertaining and forced myself to finish.

Good Narration and Interesting Story
Revisado: 02-09-21
This is my first William Boyd novel and I was a little hesitant due to it having a male narrator, but the narration by Robert Ian McKenzie was superb. The story has many twists and turns and a wide variety of characters. The narrator moved from one character voice to another with ease and the story kept me engaged until the very end. I would recommend it!

Disturbing story about racism
Revisado: 12-19-20
Story is well written and well narrated, but the topic is a disturbing look at racism and how truthfulness is treated when people have things to hide. I felt so sorry for all the things that happened to Violet Rue when she is abandoned by her family for simply telling the truth. And, I was furious at all the men who took advantage of her. Although the story is a disturbing look at our society, it is one of those stories you need to read to be reminded of all the hate and racism toward people of color and women that still exists.
