Historia
While this nation has yet to elect its first woman president—and though history has downplayed her role—just over a century ago a woman became the nation’s first acting president. In fact, she was born in 1872, and her name was Edith Bolling Galt Wilson. For the first time, we have a biography that takes an unflinching look at the woman whose ascent mirrors that of many powerful American women before and since, one full of the compromises and complicities women have undertaken throughout time in order to find security for themselves and make their mark on history.

Readers voice lacked Edith’s strength
Revisado: 08-01-24
The reader was too soft and had a near whisper in her voice that made Edith Wilson’s story of a strong minded and devoted wife seem delicate and submissive. It was hard to feel the strength Edith must have had to carry on as caregiver and advisor with this readers soft and breathy voice.

Historia
Here is an extraordinary portrait of one of the most complicated - and misunderstood - figures among the Founding Fathers. In 1804, while serving as vice president, Aaron Burr fought a duel with his political nemesis, Alexander Hamilton, and killed him. In 1807, he was arrested, tried, and acquitted of treason. In 1833, Burr is newly married, an aging statesman considered a monster by many. But he is determined to tell his own story, and he chooses to confide in a young New York City journalist. Burr is the first novel in Gore Vidal's Narratives of Empire series.

Genius at work!
Revisado: 11-17-23
Gore Vidal, cleverly weaves gender morality into the ironically advantaged males beguiled by Circe-like characters who are preferably kept as visual showpieces. Even the peeling away of the Connecticut onion results in disaster on her performance platform. Onions can make us cry without spending a dime on emotion. Gore paints a multi-dimensional picture of a less-well known founder. He’s genius holds the mystical pen for us to enjoy!

Historia
When the body of a suicide victim disappears at West Point Military Academy in 1831, only to be discovered hours later missing its heart, the Academy calls on retired detective Gus Landor to investigate. Landor is something of a legend among his peers, noted for an uncanny, Holmesian ability to read people. When Edgar Allan Poe, a new cadet, comes forth with his own cryptic conclusion—that the man Landor is looking for is a poet—Landor is intrigued and enlists Poe as his assistant.

Historia
As a police launch speeds across Miami's Biscayne Bay - with officer Nestor Camacho on board - Tom Wolfe is off and running. Here is a big, panoramic story of the new America, as told by our master chronicler of the way we live now. Based on the same sort of detailed, on-scene, high-energy reporting that powered Tom Wolfe's previous best-selling novels, Back to Blood is another brilliant, spot-on, scrupulous, and often hilarious reckoning with our times.

Historia
Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn’t spoken for many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy’s childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself.

No
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from My Name Is Lucy Barton?
The hospital was just depressing and not a good back drop...boring

Historia
Step into the powerhouse life of Bull Meecham. He's all Marine -- fighter pilot, king of the clouds, and absolute ruler of his family. Lillian is his wife -- beautiful, southern-bred, with a core of velvet steel. Without her cool head, her kids would be in real trouble. Ben is the oldest, a born athlete whose best never satisfies the big man. Ben's got to stand up, even fight back, against a father who doesn't give in -- not to his men, not to his wife, and certainly not to his son.

Santini-He was who he was
Revisado: 07-29-16
If you could sum up The Great Santini in three words, what would they be?
no excuses, unapologetic, rough
What did you like best about this story?
The tales men told of their tails....
What about Dick Hill’s performance did you like?
AMAZING!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Santini went back to the BB Court and his wife acknowledged that his practice after the 1:1 scene was an apology.
Any additional comments?
Mary Ann annoyed the heck out of me.

Historia
Tom Wolfe's best-selling modern classic tells the story of Sherman McCoy, an elite Wall Street bond trader who has it all: wealth, power, prestige, a Park Avenue apartment, a beautiful wife, and an even more beautiful mistress - until one wrong turn sends Sherman spiraling downward into a humiliating fall from grace. A car accident in the Bronx involving Sherman, his girlfriend, and two young lower-class Black men sets a match to the incendiary racial and social tensions of 1980s New York City.

Tom you are a Southerner
Revisado: 07-29-16
What made the experience of listening to The Bonfire of the Vanities the most enjoyable?
Find the melding of a story written by a Master craftsman...who's able to integrate his Southern roots into the daintiness of the story line....Sherman, Marshall, the RELee statue, the foxy chic, while not being intimidated by New Yorkers...A shame the movie didn't master the story the same way. Oh and the Brit....PERFECTO!!!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Marshall-great accessory....really a dachshund? Perfect visual for a accomplice to an affair....haha, Tom you are really a humorist. Love it.
Which scene was your favorite?
The dinner party...and the short hand to describe the x-rays...especially the description of how the one x-ray's ass had disappeared....
If you could rename The Bonfire of the Vanities, what would you call it?
"The Bond of NY"
Any additional comments?
Loved the language....because it made the visual....a white woman and brown lipstick living in the Bronx....and what does one think of when hearing about a woman's lips? Especially wrapped in brown lipstick? Oh Tom you jokester....:-)

Historia
The great thing about Washington is no matter how many elections you lose, how many times you're indicted, how many scandals you've been tainted by, well, the great thing is you can always eat lunch in that town again. What keeps the permanent government spinning on its carousel is the freedom of shamelessness, and that mother's milk of politics, cash. What Julia Phillips did for Hollywood, Timothy Crouse did for journalists, and Michael Lewis did for Wall Street, Mark Leibovich does for our nation's capital.

More than I wanted to know!
Revisado: 12-08-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Great insiders view of the cynical media lifestyle that feeds off the powerful but, the gossip felt a little to invasive for me, was blushing most of the book. I did enjoy hearing the frank unrevealing.
What about Joe Barrett’s performance did you like?
Good voice, inflection and kept it lively.
Do you think This Town needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Of course...the story continues and really there's a lot more on social media getting folks in trouble that would be fodder for a next book.
Any additional comments?
I live and work around the Beltway, it was helpful to be entertained by the stories of what most folks assume happens...but, names, dates and specifics make it come to life.
