Hidden Gem
Revisado: 10-16-23
My last couple of listens were Bukowski titles in the plus catalog. This book appeared in my recommendations. The characters are well developed and the story is captivating. Performance is great too, accents sound genuine to me even though I am not overly familiar with the area of the country being presented. Has a good mixture of funny, sad and frustrating moments where I am angry at the actions of characters and wish I could help out! Haven't quite finished, I have an hour left, but overall a great listen and I will be looking for other titles by the author and narrator.

SPOILER: Huge hole in the plot
Revisado: 06-20-23
Overall was worth a listen and I made it to the end, but I couldn't get past one thing that bothered me until the end. When somebody who referenced the Clockwork Orange visits Jane while she is with her son and warns her to stop investigating, why didn't he just place a tracking device on her car? She went to great lengths to change plates, use burner phones, change her appearance and her billionaire pursuers didn't find her. It would have been easy to track her every move. Also, they knew where her son was after the visit, so why did they then just leave him alone and not take him in order to stop her? They threatened to harm him and take him, but never did.
For me, the narration wasn't terrible, but the narrator's voice for the son was painful. I was glad they didn't go back to him later. For male characters too it was pretty bad.

A leading light on the alternative and indie music scene for nearly 40 years, Jeff Tweedy is a master of the art in the artifice of songwriting. In this volume, Tweedy introduces listeners to the people, occasions, and frames of mind that have inspired but don’t necessarily populate the iconic songbooks of bands Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, and Tweedy.

...and I'm a huge fan! Great listening to Jeff and his insights into some of his greatest work. The acoustic performances of Jesus, etc. and You Are Not Alone are amazing, wish I had them to listen to outside of Audible. This title is a perfect example of the value of the Plus collection. Thank you Audible!

Nils Shapiro accepts what appears to be an easy, lucrative job: find out if Beverly Mayer’s grandson is foolishly throwing away his trust fund in Hollywood, especially now, in the wake of his fiancée’s tragic death. However, that easy job becomes much more complicated once Nils arrives in Los Angeles, a disorienting place where the sunshine hides dark secrets. Nils quickly suspects that Ebben Mayer’s fiancée was murdered and that Ebben himself may have been the target.

Terrible Failure and Disappointment!
Revisado: 05-25-23
I thoroughly enjoyed books 1-3 in the Nils Shapiro series. The storyline, the humor and narration were top notch. As others have said, switching from Macleod Andrews to this new guy was an unforgiveable mistake! I have never been so disappointed with an Audiobook. I got an hour into this trying desperately to get used to the new narrator, but eventually just had to turn it off and delete it cringing! I could have dealt with the new voice of Nils, but the other characters that Bronson Pinchot butchered?! Jameson White was a delight previously, and a real joy to hear. In this book I can't explain just how badly Jameson's voice is performed, let alone the LA characters. I wonder if Matt Goldman has heard this performance? Has he heard the others? It's unbelievable that such a great combo was thrown away like this. I'm really curious as to why this change was made.

Trying way too hard to be funny
Revisado: 07-19-19
I read some of the 'Laughing out loud' so much that I annoyed my coworkers reviews and thought I'd give this a try. I only lasted 4 minutes and had to switch it off, cringing. The author was trying way too hard to be funny I felt. I'm annoyed I wasted one of my two originals on this.

Literally laughing out loud during my commute.
Revisado: 08-28-18
I honestly thought this would be a serious biography of Steve Coogan. Up to now I mainly listen to biographies of comedians or musicians and a bit of fiction. I'm only 6 chapters in of 30+ but this really is hilarious if you're a fan of Alan Partridge. Highly recommended.

Gene Wilder is one of the great comic actors who defined the 1970s and 1980s in movies. From his work with Woody Allen, to the rich group of movies he made with Mel Brooks, to his partnership on screen with Richard Pryor, Wilder's performances are still discussed and celebrated today.

Revisado: 08-07-18
I just finished listening to this. It's so sad listening to Gene reading his story now that he is no longer with us. It isn't laugh out loud funny most of the time, more of an insight into his journey and stories behind his biggest moments. Very enjoyable.

Good twists, enthralling, narration irritating
Revisado: 07-13-18
Great concept how the story jumps between characters and timelines and is clearly pointed out - you aren't struggling to work out when something happened, etc. I got more and more into the story as it progressed. The ending seemed obvious, but I found myself searching for other possibilities. There is a final twist I wasn't expecting. Well written!
My main gripe was the narration. All 3 of the main characters read their parts excellently, but when they had to do another accent/sex for another character it really started to get on my nerves! In fairness, had this been one narrator it would have been worse, but the gruff cop trying to do the female English accent was bad, as was the reverse. When I was getting to the really interesting parts of the book I found myself more and more put off by the voices and didn't want them to have to break from their own character.
