Dry and Dramatic
Revisado: 03-14-25
The guts of revolution were recorded in letters, reports, assignments, and newspapers. That makes for dry reading of astounding importance.

Historia
Scientists are learning more and more about how brain activity controls behavior and how neural circuits weigh alternatives and initiate actions. As we probe ever deeper into the mechanics of decision making, many conclude that agency—or free will—is an illusion. In Free Agents, leading neuroscientist Kevin Mitchell presents a wealth of evidence to the contrary, arguing that we are not mere machines responding to physical forces but agents acting with purpose.

Historia
Throughout history, thinkers from mathematicians to theologians have pondered the mysterious relationship between numbers and the nature of reality. In this fascinating book, Mario Livio tells the tale of a number at the heart of that mystery: phi, or 1.6180339887.... This curious mathematical relationship, widely known as "The Golden Ratio", was discovered by Euclid more than 2,000 years ago. Since then it has shown a propensity to appear in the most astonishing variety of places.

Historia
Asked to name a great physicist, most people would mention Newton or Einstein, Feynman or Hawking. But ask a physicist and there’s no doubt that James Clerk Maxwell will be near the top of the list. Maxwell, an unassuming Victorian Scotsman, explained how we perceive color. He uncovered the way gases behave. And, most significantly, he transformed the way physics was undertaken in his explanation of the interaction of electricity and magnetism, revealing the nature of light and laying the groundwork for everything from Einstein’s special relativity to modern electronics.

The extraordinary Siddhartha Mukherjee has written a biography of the gene as deft, brilliant, and illuminating as his extraordinarily successful biography of cancer. Weaving science, social history, and personal narrative to tell us the story of one of the most important conceptual breakthroughs of modern times, Mukherjee animates the quest to understand human heredity and its surprising influence on our lives, personalities, identities, fates, and choices.

What a long strange trip it has been
Revisado: 05-03-24
While primarily an historical narrative I loved how Mukherjee tells stories about the scientists who made breakthroughs in the field of genetics and what motivated there explorations. He also discusses the pitfalls that society has fallen in along the journey of genetic knowledge, frequently pitfalls of avarice or prejudice. Today, everyday we see advertisements for biologic medications for niche maladies-amazing! Today, we are offered genome sequencing to understand either our heredity and relatedness or to understand what maladies we might succumb to. To see the details of the history of these miracles is amazing and hopeful. To understand the perils that humanity survived to get to this point is a bit terrifying. Still, this marvelous book is already out of date. We now hear that a person has successfully been treated for Sickle-cell disease by introduced genes. Another milestone has been reached.

Everyone who makes the journey faces an impossible choice. Hundreds of thousands of people who arrive every year at the US-Mexico border travel far from their homes. For years, the majority came from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, but many more have begun their journey much farther away. Some flee persecution, others crime or hunger. They may have already been deported, but the United States remains their only hope for safety and prosperity. They will take their chances.

Immigration and foreign policy, both broken
Revisado: 03-27-24
The use of personal stories of immigrants to illustrate both the causes of immigration and how the policies warped the flow was very effective and very moving. It is sad that our political leaders use such cruel policies to show their strength at the border.

I loved the changing moods, romantic, thrilling, terrifying, hopeful, sad. That we can be teasported through these feelings, in sympathy with the characters is a testament to the skill and hard work of the author. I would have liked to hear from the author about her research. ןs the story based upon interviews with survivors. How do you learn from testimony without copying it?

Historia
Sylvie Pelletier recounts leaving her family’s snowbound mountain cabin to work in a manor house for the Padgetts, owners of the marble-mining company that employs her father and dominates the town. Sharp-eyed Sylvie is awed by the luxury around her; fascinated by her employer, the charming “Countess” Inge, and confused by the erratic affections of Jasper, the bookish heir to the family fortune. Her fairy-tale ideas of romance take a dark turn when she realizes the Padgetts’ lofty philosophical talk is at odds with the unfair labor practices that have enriched them.

Welcome to the brutal life in a mining town
Revisado: 01-19-24
A wonderful performance of a marvelous story. I love historical fiction because it brings the stories to life. The story of how brave miners extracted blocks of marble from Colorado mountains is important enough. But the story of labour's struggle for safety and living wages is crucial. This book inspires to persevere in spite of tragedy.
