Cliffhanger
Revisado: 04-27-25
I really liked this cozy mystery. I liked the characters and I love the little town and the bookstore. The storyline held my interest and I was surprised to find out who the murderer was. The only thing that I didn’t like is that you need to buy the next one in the series to perhaps get an answer to something that is a secondary story throughout the entire book.

Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Okay Second in Series
Revisado: 08-11-24
I loved the characters in the first book but for most of the second in the series, I found the main characters decidedly unlikeable for various reasons. Chapters 20-25 were actually pretty good and the characters were more likable. I’m not sure if I will continue with this series.

From the moment its shadow falls over the village, Gamache, now Chief Superintendent of the Sûreté du Québec, suspects the creature has deep roots and a dark purpose. Yet he does nothing. What can he do? Only watch and wait. And hope his mounting fears are not realized.

Historia
Everyone refers to the St. Cecelia as “the Saint.” If you grew up coming here, you were “a Saint.” If you came from the wrong side of the river, you were “an Ain’t.” Traci Eddings was one of those outsiders whose family wasn’t rich enough or connected enough to vacation here. But she could work here. One fateful summer she did, and married the boss’s son. Now, she’s the widowed owner of the hotel, determined to see it return to its glory days, even as staff shortages and financial troubles threaten to ruin it. Plus, her greedy and unscrupulous brother-in-law wants to make sure she fails.

Really enjoyable book, definitely not a lighthearted summer read but still perfect for summer. I did figure a few crucial things out but it didn’t ruin the book for me. The narrator did a great job!

Although the narration isn’t always the best, after the 3rd book in the series, I’ve gotten to it. I really enjoy the cozy mystery books and this one is no exception. I love all the characters and the setting. I do get sweet cravings while listening though! 😂

Historia
Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.
