Historia
Britain's Special Air Service - or SAS - was the brainchild of David Stirling, a young, gadabout aristocrat whose aimlessness in early life belied a remarkable strategic mind. Where most of his colleagues looked at a battlefield map of World War II's African theater and saw a protracted struggle with Rommel's desert forces, Stirling saw an opportunity: Given a small number of elite, well-trained men, he could parachute behind enemy lines and sabotage their airplanes and war matériel.

Riveting action and heart warming characters
Revisado: 07-09-24
Mr. MacIntyre is my FAVORITE historical author. Rogue Heroes is no exception. He brings the men and their commitment to defeating the Nazis, and the sacrifices they made in order to be victorious over true evil into riveting prose. I’m going back to read Mincemeat and Agent Sonia. SO GOOD!

Historia
As far as Carol Spencer is concerned, the war has spoiled everything. She and Don had been engaged for years and were on the verge of marriage when he was shot down in the South Pacific, leaving Carol on the verge of spinsterhood at 24. She wants to take some kind of job in the war effort, but her invalid mother demands that Carol accompany her to the family's summer home in Maine. But when they arrive at the faded mansion, they find it completely locked up. The servants are gone, the lights are dark - and there is a body in the closet.

Excellent classic mystery by one of the original Queens of Mystery.
Revisado: 12-30-23
The narration is mediocre. She tries for various voices, but they all sound the same. The women’s voices all sound whiney and the men’s are sharp and grating.

Suspense right until the denouement!
Revisado: 07-18-23
The great thing about the Jackson & Evans series is that her plots are not predictable. You’ll be kept guessing, but the ending makes total sense. Her characters have depth and are well developed. R. Armitrage is a superior narrator.

The promise of good money and the intense bonds of friendship brought men back year after year. Mining is about being a man and a fighter in a job where tomorrow always brings the hope of a big score.

Revisado: 02-04-22
This book brought back that tragedy. I’m an Idahoan and was 12 when this occurred. The stories of the men is well told here. Heartbreaking, informative and enthralling. My Audible had a few glitches in the recording, and the narrator needs to AT LEAST learn how to pronounce the place names. It’s Boy-see, not Boy-zee, and St. Marie’s not St Mary’s.

Charlotte MacLeod is known for her witty turn of phrase. This is a delightful romp into the type of world made known by the likes of CS Lewis and Lewis Carrol. She takes Peter Shandy with her on this adventure, and those of us who love that series will enjoy this to no end. I laughed out loud many times.
