Historia
Twenty-five years ago, when Pat Robertson and other televangelists first spoke of the United States being a Christian nation that would build a global Christian empire, it was hard to take such hyperbolic rhetoric seriously. Today, such language no longer sounds like hyperbole but poses, instead, a very real threat to our freedoms and our way of life.

The Christian Right, A Would Be Totalitarian Force
Revisado: 12-31-19
This look at all things evangelical was the most significant book I have read in 2019. Though I am sure that are many who identify as Christians as one flavor or another and are genuine in their effort to reflect Christ's teachings in their lives, American Fascists is an investigation of all the others who use the label "Christian" to validate their religious and political agendas.
The author takes the listener to the training session for those personally evangelizing non-believers, making one wonder if Christianity is faith or a mind-control cult. Through the voices of those who have been members and researchers who have studied right-wing evangelical churches, one sees institutions who trade emotional and social support for total.surrender to all the taboos, political opinions, and behavioral expectations of the church.
Among the scariest sections of Chris Hedges' book is his examination of evangelicals efforts to change America' pluralistic democracy into a dominionist state, one where all laws, policies and culture are reflections of those in the Bible as interpreted by the evangelical community. To that evangelicals offer special "Christian Leadership" training to members of congress, lobbying for legislation that deny women their right to make reproductive decisions regarding their bodies, laws that block gays, lesibians, and transgender citizens from the marriage, enlistment in the military, and other rights enjoyed by hetrosexual citizens. Probably the scariest section to me was the effort to force students of science to learn from a creationist of intelligent design curriculum. Also their efforts to redirect research funding from projects that do not comport with the dominionist agenda.
Anyone who reads this book with an open mind will come away with a different perspective on evangelical Chrisianity.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

An Anthology of Psychological Myth-busting
Revisado: 09-20-19
Talking To Strangers, the latest gift to readers from Malcolm Gladwell, and is the best nonfiction that I have read this summer. It can be described as an anthology of psychological myth-busting. For instance, he begins by analyzing can those who have to make decisions to employ, grant parole, or reward people make better decisions by meeting with them face to face or using records, tests, and reports. He analyzes the question can you know from talking to someone or observing their body language or micro facial movements if a person is lying or guilty of something. He analyzes the fascinating phenomena of coupling between methods and suicide as well as location and crime. His short analysis of Amanda Marie Knox’s arrest, trial and release is an excellent discussion of how people judge one another based on expected behavior norms. Gladwell narrates his own book with a lecture-style that I wish all my professors had used.

Historia
What is autism: a lifelong disability or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is both of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

A Must Read for All That Would Understand
Revisado: 07-31-18
Nuero Tribes by Steve Silberman is a comprehensive and powerful history of the slow discovery these two conditions, the social reactions to their discovery and a review of the literature related to autism and Asperger's spectrum. It is as thorough in its discussion and as engaging as Emperor of All Maladies was for cancer. Anyone interested in a comprehensive primer on autism and Asperger's syndrome should start with this listen.

Historia
You can pick your friends, they say, but you can't pick your family. And lately, Mike Daley's family has been keeping him very busy. An ex-priest, ex-public defender, and ex-corporate lawyer, Daley and his former wife, Rosie Fernandez, now run their own San Francisco criminal defense firm. Most of their cases are fairly small-time, which is why it would be surprising that the person accused of murdering movie director Richard (Big Dick) MacArthur is calling them - except that the accused is Rosie's own niece, Angelina.

Historia
Jacob Hunt is a teen with Asperger's syndrome. He's hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, though he is brilliant in many ways. But he has a special focus on one subject - forensic analysis. A police scanner in his room clues him in to crime scenes, and he's always showing up and telling the cops what to do. And he's usually right. But when Jacob's small hometown is rocked by a terrible murder, law enforcement comes to him. Jacob's behaviors are hallmark Asperger's, but they look a lot like guilt to the local police.

Mother who Excels, Two Brothers who Learn to Cope
Revisado: 07-13-18
This is by far the best novel that I have read in several months. It had three dimensions that were all handled with great talent. It was an excellent mystery with a plot that kept the reader well engaged. There was an intimate look at a family made up of a single mother, one son with Asperger's syndrome and the younger normal son. Both sons are brilliant in their way. The third dimension that the author develops well is her cast of characters. The mother reminded of my own mother, she feels deeply for the social pain her asperger son endures, but is committed to doing whatever is necessary to make him as independent as possible and help him cope with his social challenges. She does not rationalize away her responsibilities to her son, but explores every way to help this eighteen year old man grow into his own. The author is extremely knowledgeable concerning the Autism spectrum. I probably learned as much about the spectrum as I have from the several nonfiction books on the subject that I read/listened to. The author has also done a fine job of creating the mother. She seems to use a composite of the mothers of the disabled who choose not to rationalize their surrender from the responsibility that every parent has to make your child as independent of that parent. As all good parents know this is a job not finished until death calls for that parent. ...
