Historia
An almost limitless archive of our history lies hidden inside our bodies, and this book traces the ancient story of Scotland from that scientific viewpoint. The mushrooming of genetic studies, of DNA analysis, is rewriting history in spectacular fashion. In Scotland: A Genetic Journey, Alistair Moffat explores the history that is printed on our genes, and in a remarkable new approach, uncovers the detail of where Scots are from, where they have journeyed, and who they are - and in so doing, vividly colors in a DNA map of Scotland.

I loved everything about this book and I learned a lot about the far history of Scotland and how interwoven that history is with so many other people. I especially loved the cast amount of info about the Picts. A most excellent listen!

Historia
On a muggy August day in 2001, Alexandra Lind was unexpectedly thrown backwards in time, landing in the year of Our Lord 1658. Catapulted into an unfamiliar and frightening new existence, Alex could do nothing but adapt. After all, while time-traveling in itself is a most rare occurrence, time-traveling with a return ticket is even rarer. Fortunately for Alex, she lands at the feet of Matthew Graham. No woman could ask for a better guide or protector in this strange new world of hers.

Don't choose these thinking they're like Outlander
Revisado: 10-27-21
Okay, so a time travel series where the female main character goes back to 17th century Scotland is appealing on the surface, but despite a fairly complex plot line and excellent narration with an authentic and delightfully deep-voiced brogue, the story is one painful struggle after another. According to the author, Matthew and Alex love each other but you don't FEEL that in the text. There are a few intimate scenes but they're mild in detail and VERY short on the emotion needed to convey their feelings toward each other. Nowhere did I sense the point where Alex falls in love - yes, she needs him for protection, but I continually found myself urging her to go back to her own time as Matthew breaks promise after promise, exhibits questionable judgment (over and over) and honestly doesn't seem worthy of her love whatsoever. Perhaps Matthew's attitude, and his end of their relationship, is expected based on his century, but I think one generally expects more depth (quality) of character in the male "hero" role in a romance-ish story line - not perfection, but a LOT closer to a trustworthy and dependable man than Matthew appears to be. (Matthew is certainly NOT a Jamie Fraser-caliber man) Alex *clearly* needs more from him and doesn't get it, yet she seems devoted nonetheless. Why?
The story is fairly interesting and not shallow, yet the characters are, in my opinion. There is no rise and fall of joy and sadness/despair - it's one horrible thing happening after another. I almost feel depressed after a listening session - who needs more of that than life already gives us!? I'm so disappointed in the characters, I won't be continuing this series - which is a shame, because I adore long story lines. I'll wait for the next Outlander installment.

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

10 hrs of anguish - trigger warning
Revisado: 09-17-21
I'm at a loss as how to describe this book. After loving and devouring Miss Benson's Beetle, I couldn't buy this title fast enough. My haste was not rewarded. First, there were very fleeting moments of positivity and the narration throughout was excellent. However, having actually experienced the traumatic events told in this story, it was profoundly and excruciatingly painful to relive. My hope for the story's redemption kept me listening, but hour after hour my hopes were denied. I spent at least a third of this book with tears streaming down my face - I wish I'd stopped listening early on, or not started at all... but I suppose that is one of the story's lessons - anguish over that which cannot be undone. Some may feel I've missed the overall meaning of this book - but real life doesn't often have tidy resolutions. While Rex was so spot-on with his description of grief as a big hole in the ground you initially fall into over and over but eventually learn to walk around, that hole never magically gets smaller.
I suppose what I'm trying to get across is the degree to which this story could be a serious trigger for those of us who have not entirely healed from the loss of a child, regrets and anguish and the devastating control cancer has over our lives.

It is 1950. London is still reeling from World War II, and Margery Benson, a schoolteacher and spinster, is trying to get through life, surviving on scraps. One day, she reaches her breaking point, abandoning her job and small existence to set out on an expedition to the other side of the world in search of her childhood obsession: an insect that may or may not exist - the golden beetle of New Caledonia. When she advertises for an assistant to accompany her, the woman she ends up with is the last person she had in mind.

Lissie is a nurse in a gritty, hectic London neighborhood. Always terribly competent and good at keeping it all together, she’s been suffering quietly with PTSD after helping to save the victim of a shocking crime. Her supervisor quietly arranges for Lissie to spend a few months doing a much less demanding job in the little town of Kirrinfeif in Scottish Highlands, hoping that the change of scenery will help her heal. Lissie will be swapping places with Cormack, an Army veteran who’s Kirrinfeif’s easygoing nurse/paramedic/all-purpose medical man.

LOVE!!
Revisado: 07-20-21
Book 3: I inadvertently began this series with this book (#3) but loved it so much I had to have more of these characters, but generally would suggest reading them in order so when you encounter the other wonderful folks you'll understand their backstories and smile. (well, I did)
The mother's loss in this book hit too close to home for me - so there was a lot more crying than in the other two stories. Lissie's trauma and anxiety was (I thought) well depicted with appropriate and realistic triggers - still, she's a remarkably strong and admirable woman. Cormack is wonderfully quirky and self-aware. The depth of character development the author is able to accomplish is exceptional in such a short book.
The Series: Any story line that has me both laughing and crying, nodding in agreement and talking back to the characters or narrative is a winner! I absolutely adored the writer's style and wit and the characters' personalities were well-developed and consistent. Narration was lovely and I appreciated and enjoyed proper Scottish pronunciations and inflections. I often found myself (in all three books) staring out into space during a description of a beautiful scene of the Highlands and sighing with the beauty in my mind's eye. The author has an exceptional ability to bring the magnificence of Scotland's landscape to the listener/reader.
The story and characters were truly standouts in my opinion - and I really, really wish there were more to this series. Hear me, Jenny?? :)

Historia
Desperate to escape from London, single mother Zoe wants to build a new life for herself and her four-year-old son Hari. She can barely afford the crammed studio apartment on a busy street where shouting football fans keep them awake all night. Hari’s dad, Jaz, a charismatic but perpetually broke DJ, is no help at all. But his sister, Surinder, comes to Zoe’s aid, hooking her up with a job as far away from the urban crush as possible: a bookshop on the banks of Loch Ness. And there’s a second job to cover housing: Zoe will be an au pair at a castle in the Scottish Highlands.

Bizarre
Revisado: 06-23-21
A moderately interesting story completely botched and ruined by the most horrendous narration I’ve EVER heard. I don’t know what the author was thinking, but she needed to have left the reading of her book to a professional. (If I were to describe the narration as an attempt at a female William Shatner, that would be insulting to him, as comical as his deliveries can be). Having said that, the story alone was decent (the only reason I made it all the way through).

An engaging story, well-narrated… until the ending which seemed purely insane to me. Why on earth would Caroline have done that!? I don’t think she would have - or should have… sigh - how frustrating!
