Just okay
Revisado: 01-20-25
The concept of this book was interesting but the execution was less than stellar. The idea of this book was very interesting but I found the prose shallow and plain. Metaphors were basic at best and seemed to be placed into the book randomly and without thought. This could have been a really good book because the idea was different from anything I have read before. I just wish it was written....better. I am surprised at all of the 5 star reviews. This is not a 5 star book.

Historia
A heartwarming, uplifting village romance for fans of Holly Martin, Tilly Tennant and Cathy Bramley. Buying a thatched cottage in the country may not be the usual cure for a broken heart. But after Clara Maxwell finds out her boyfriend and best friend have been sneaking around behind her back, packing her bags and leaving everything in London behind feels like it's the only way forward. When Henry Garnett, her (rather handsome) new contractor, turns up with his little daughter Pansy and a van shaped like a cottage in tow, she isn't sure whether to laugh or cry.

Easy listen with a happy ending. All of the characters in the story are starting over in some respect.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

I thought this was a very unique story. I loved how it integrated the house throughout. Tom Hanks did an excellent job as narrator.

His name is Matthew Walker, and he's come to spend the summer on the Cape with his parents. Why? Well, he wants to meet you before he heads off to college in the fall. Difficult to listen to main narrator
Revisado: 12-31-23
The storyline was okay. This book was way longer than necessary. Much of this has to do with how slowly the main character Harlow was voiced. I found it incredibly difficult to listen to. How can someone sound like they are on the verge of tears with every sentence they speak? Listen and find out.

Villain Origin Story
Revisado: 12-09-23
I really enjoyed this as I did all of the Hunger Games novels. I loved how this showed where President Snow came from and how he formed his sense of self in the world. We are all somewhat a product of our environment and experiences. Nature versus nurture. What makes us who we are.

Historia
Ever have one of those days where life just plain sucks? Welcome to my last three months - ever since I caught my can’t-be-soon-enough-ex-husband cheating with his paralegal. I’m 35 years old, and I’ve lost my NYC apartment, my job, my money, and frankly, my dignity. But the final heartache in the suck sandwich of my life? My great-aunt Maggie died. The only family member who’s ever gotten me. Even after death, though, she’s helping me get back up again. Too bad that bravado only lasts as long as it takes to drive into Huckleberry Hills. And see the house.

Obnoxious waste of time.
Revisado: 11-26-23
I really don’t understand how this book was so well rated. I couldn’t get beyond the sophomoric inner dialogue of the protagonist. I listened for maybe 45 minutes before I decided it was a waste of my time.

I loved it! Fun characters and great narration. I really enjoyed the novel. Although the characters get in situations that make you want to protest at the unjustness of it all, they are able to make the best of it and persevere in the end.

Terrible Choice for Main Narrator
Revisado: 08-22-22
I found the story to be engaging and interesting, but I just don't understand how the narrator for Evelyn's character was chosen. Evelyn is described as beautiful and sexy, but the reader for her character has this slow, halting way of reading. When she reads for other characters, they pretty much all sound the same. Her voice also sounds much too old for the character. The other narrators were great. Unfortunately, the majority of the book was read by Evelyn's character. This is one of those novels that probably would have been much better if I read, rather than listened to.
