Three time-traveling historians are visiting World War II England: Michael Davies, intent on observing heroism during the Miracle of Dunkirk; Merope Ward, studying children evacuated from London; and Polly Churchill, posing as a shopgirl in the middle of the Blitz. Love the Series
Revisado: 08-07-19
But you really have to read them in order! It's been a little while since I read the last book so I was a little lost at the beginning, I can't imagine diving into this series at this point. Well worth finding the first book and going from there!

It was a long story that seemed to have one or two too many characters. I did like the narrators.

Historia
In the near future of Robert Charles Wilson's Last Year, the technology exists to open doorways into the past - but not our past, not exactly. Each "past" is effectively an alternate world, identical to ours but only up to the date on which we access it. And a given "past" can be reached only once. After a passageway is open, it's the only road to that particular past; once closed, it can't be reopened.

Interesting story about time travel, the ethics of it, and greed. Thought provoking, though not too deep.

Historia
In 1631, Sara de Vos is admitted as a master painter to the Guild of St. Luke's in Holland, the first woman to be so recognized. Three hundred years later, only one work attributed to de Vos is known to remain - a haunting winter scene, At the Edge of a Wood, which hangs over the bed of a wealthy descendant of the original owner. An Australian grad student, Ellie Shipley, struggling to stay afloat in New York, agrees to paint a forgery of the landscape, a decision that will haunt her.

Is forgery art?
Revisado: 11-20-18
Not one of the major questions asked in the book, but it is in the readers guide, but it is an interesting question. The lives of the artist, forger, and owner of the painting at the time of the forgery parallel in interesting ways.

Historia
It's 1864 in downtrodden Lowell, Massachusetts. The Civil War has taken its toll on the town - leaving the economy in ruin and its women in dire straits. That is, until Asa Mercer arrives on a peculiar, but providential, errand: he seeks high-minded women who can exert an elevating influence in Seattle, where there are ten men for every woman. Mail-order brides, yes, but of a certain caliber.

Great Book About Strong Women at A Different Time
Revisado: 08-06-18
This book was, I believe, based on real occurrences, and yes, it was a bit romanticized, if that is a descriptive word. Not in the sense that everybody ends up living and loving happily ever after, but that the situations could be a lot rougher and scarier than described. You have to remember the time the book is set in to not be totally enraged about the way some women were treated, e.g., not being able to take their own money out of a bank without a husband or father with them. But the different women with different stories were interesting, and not totally predictable. Good even for book clubs, during what mine would call an easier month (summer), when nobody wants to put a lot of thought into what they are reading, yet some good discussion topics arise.

Wonderful Story
Revisado: 10-10-17
I laughed, I cried, I thought, I was frustrated. Families can be so hard on each other, some fall apart, others pull together. All American themes, baseball, church, war, patriotism, family, all come into the story to make this a great one.

It was a long story, well worth it in the end. Not sure how it could be shorter as there did need to be some background development, but a good listen

Reeeaallly long
Revisado: 09-22-16
Even listening at 1.35 speed this was a long book, kind of a fantastic (as in fantasy, not great) ending. Some things could have been explained a bit better, but again it is a fantasy book more or less. Good narration

New York City is one of the fashion capitals of the world, well known for its glamour and style. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the runway, where American haute couture continually astounds with its creativity, daring, and innovation in the name of beauty. Yet high fashion means high stakes, as Alex Cooper quickly discovers when businessman and designer Wolf Savage is found dead in an apparent suicide, mere days before the biggest show of his career.

Surprise twists and turns, good all the way to the end. Only one more person/ loose string needed to be "tied up" at the end, but it seem there's more to come...........?
