Historia
Orphaned Heidi lives with her gruff but caring grandfather on the side of Swiss mountain, where she befriends young Peter the goat-herd. She leads an idyllic life, until she is forced to leave the mountain she has always known to go and live with a sickly girl in the city. Will Heidi ever see her grandfather again? A classic tale of a young girl's coming-of-age, of friendship, and familial love, Heidi has inspired countless dramatic versions, both on TV and in film.

This story does not age well.
Revisado: 05-04-24
The narrator did a fine job, but I felt like she wanted it to be over with nearly as much as I did.
I remember being charmed by Heidi when I was a child, but that was probably because it was a way to learn about a different time/place.
Yes, I know we can’t judge other times and cultures through a current lens. The eye rolling parts for me were the heavy handed religious drop ins. If they had been consistent throughout, and done with a lighter touch, fine. I would have bailed earlier.
Still, the perspective of childhood developing emotions and sense of wonder kept me going - hoping that I could get to the point of remembering why I had fond feelings for Heidi.
Those “oh yeah!” were drop ins, too.

One of the most deftly written books that I’ve read
Revisado: 02-24-24
Not a fast paced story (for the genre). It moves in a languorous way.
I love a look behind the scenes into the justice system, including the long periods of “hurry up, and wait”, and this delivers.
The narration was wonderfully suited.
It’s a keeper.

Decent junk food
Revisado: 02-19-24
The concept looked interesting (baking / cozy), but the baking aspect unspools. Still, I liked the characters, so I kept going. Not bad! They develop as the series continues - for the most part.
“Junk food” isn’t a pejorative. Sometimes it’s good to curl up with a *fun* book.
The narration started off as pretty great, given that she’s got a huge range of characters and cultures to read, but the slide into more and more vocal fry … by book 8 had me crabby.
I’m nearly done with #9, so I’ll probably finish the series, but I’m struggling to try to listen to the meat of the story around the fry.

Last year, Rachel Bacharach met the man of her dreams at a Hanukkah party — and then her outgoing best friend Tamara swooped in and “called” Oz Caplan for herself. It’s a typical outcome for the dependable, bookish Rachel, who is never able to extinguish the spark she immediately felt for Oz. But being secretly in love with her best friend’s boyfriend all year hasn’t been easy.

Meh.
Revisado: 11-26-23
Decent premise, but the writing was choppy, and the leads were irritatingly emotionally immature. I kept thinking “my first ex-spouse”.
I’ve got no qualms with the narrators.
It was free so the only thing I lost was a few hours, and I needed some mental junk food.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Other than one more full-throated strong recommend.
Funny, sad, sassy, smart, funny, kind, and honest. Very human, without wallowing.
The narration was perfect for the book.
If I could give it an extra star in every category, I would not hesitate to do so.

Historia
Eastern Europe has long been thought of as the "Other Europe", a region rife with political upheaval, shifting national borders, an astonishing variety of ethnic diversity, and relative isolation from the centers of power in the West. It has also been, and continues to be, pivotal in the course of world events. A History of Eastern Europe offers a sweeping 1,000-year tour with a particular focus on the region's modern history.

Not much history
- De Chris Richardson en 11-25-15
I don’t go for modern history, but…
Revisado: 02-08-23
This has changed my perspective.
As a child of the 70’s and 80’s, and growing up in a military town near (then) USSR, I’m glad to get a deeper insight.
This is history that is often ignored, and currently relevant to anyone who wants to see the world in a more global context.
Worth recommending, given that I’ve already recommended, and they are plowing though it, too.
Several chapters are worth listening to more than once.
Again, not my usual, so if is remotely up your alley you likely won’t be sorry.

A very nice piece of speculative fiction
Revisado: 12-14-22
Stephenson can be a bit of a slog, so I’d recommend this as an excellent starter. Even if you don’t read anything else by him, read this one
.
The narration was excellent. I lost track of the cast of characters occasionally, but the narrator really helped me keep them sorted.
Pet peeve: the length of (particularly) the final chapter. It’s fine for print media, but for audio it was a challenge when I wanted to re-read a segment.
Saved quote: a plunging wedge of air, flockulent with grizzled crows

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

Worth re-reading
Revisado: 09-03-22
I picked this up not long after it’s release. Fascinating! An accessible look at history, and the development of modern medicine.
The characters are real people, not just stuffed shirts. A visceral look at a time that shaped who we are in a great many ways.
Then I read it again during the lock-down times. Twice. I didn’t find it depressing, or inflammatory. In it I found comfort. Science happens. People do science, and they are fallible. Maybe they aren’t the perfect, but they still do Science.
Having just gone through it again, as we approach endemic, I’m getting even more out of it.
For anyone interested in social history, or how medicine works, I cannot recommend this highly enough.
The last few chapters weren’t as sparkling as the rest of the book, but the Afterword brought me back in.
The narration was very well done, and suited the topic well.
If you are a person who likes to learn lessons from history, I’m certain you’ll get a lot out of this book. Enjoy!
