Edge of my seat tale
Revisado: 01-28-25
This is my 2nd Sarah Maine novel and it was just as good as the first. Maine presents a well developed plot and equally delicious characters, moving between what they perceive; what they feel; and what they believe. Set in wilderness of Canada in the 19th century.

To discover a heroic story that has remained untold for far too long is rewarding and inspiring, but also angering. The ARC women deserve to have their stories told the earth over! Regardless of what war, they and the nurses played as important a role as any soldier.

Memories
Revisado: 09-04-24
I was in college when the War began: went to various gatherings, marches, et al. Being a patriot, I believed in our country; but something wasn’t quite right. The Women helped so much in answering my questions and clarifying details. It was like living through those times all over again. But, now I have hindsight to guide me.

It is 1950. London is still reeling from World War II, and Margery Benson, a schoolteacher and spinster, is trying to get through life, surviving on scraps. One day, she reaches her breaking point, abandoning her job and small existence to set out on an expedition to the other side of the world in search of her childhood obsession: an insect that may or may not exist - the golden beetle of New Caledonia. When she advertises for an assistant to accompany her, the woman she ends up with is the last person she had in mind.

Historia
When bookish young American Sylvia Beach opens Shakespeare and Company on a quiet street in Paris in 1919, she has no idea that she and her new bookstore will change the course of literature itself. Shakespeare and Company is more than a bookstore and lending library: Many of the prominent writers of the Lost Generation, like Ernest Hemingway, consider it a second home.
